‘How public opinion can change policy-making process’


The World Association for Public Opinion Research (WAPOR), has reiterated the importance of public opinion in the effective policy-making process for better transformation.

The Association argued that effective public policy, informed by public opinion research, is an inevitable part of the global sustainable development programmes that are shared and targeted by many countries.

It said the economic and social development of any society is not possible without careful monitoring of the key indicators, which are often estimated based on national surveys.

As part of the Association’s 73rd annual conference in Salamanca, Spain, WAPOR representative in Nigeria, Paul Nnanwobu, highlighted some of its roles and application of survey research in monitoring public opinion.

He said, “In doing so, we recognise the ongoing revolution in survey data analysis that has been prompted by the development of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and big data availability.

“It has also been prompted by information security, new approaches to data collection and progress in online survey research, as well as stimulating both academics and practitioners to explore new approaches to integrating these resources into their assessment of public opinion.

Nnanwobu, who is the Chief Executive Officer, Random Dynamic Resources Limited, stressed the relevant submissions that focus on all aspects of public opinion and survey research were encouraged.

He urged stakeholders from Sub-Sahara Africa, especially Nigeria, to take advantage of the conference and present papers or attend to let their voices be heard.

Topics for the conference include survey research application, public opinion and policymaking, news, media, journalism, and public opinion qualitative research in changing times.

Others are big data, sentiment analysis and machine learning, digitisation of societies and usage of new sources of information in survey research, data visualisation, new technologies and online surveys, best practices for stakeholder research and expert surveys.
