Organisations must move beyond treating sustainability as a compliance requirement and embed it in leadership, risk management and long-term business strategy if they are to remain viable amid growing economic, environmental and operational pressures, the Sustainability Professionals Institute of Nigeria (SPIN) has said.

This mantra will form the centre of discussion at the Institute’s inaugural Sustainability Conference 2026, as business leaders and other stakeholders examine how organisations can adapt to an increasingly unpredictable operating environment without compromising long-term growth.

The conference, with the theme ‘The Adaptive Enterprise: Sustainability Strategies for Challenging Times,’ and scheduled for August 20, 2026, in Lagos, comes at a time when businesses are confronting multiple pressures, including economic volatility, changing regulatory expectations, climate-related risks, financing constraints, technological disruption and shifting stakeholder demands.

For SPIN, the challenge is no longer simply whether organisations should embrace sustainability, but whether they can build systems and leadership structures capable of anticipating disruption, absorbing shocks and adapting to new realities.

President of SPIN, Prof. Kenneth Amaeshi, said the institute’s inaugural conference was designed to advance sustainability beyond compliance and establish it as a central consideration in organisational leadership.

According to him, organisations need to rethink how they approach sustainability if they are to remain resilient in an environment where rapid changes are increasingly testing conventional business models.
