Lagos to integrate succession planning for workers

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode

The Lagos State Government has concluded plans to create succession plans for its public service to meet the standards of governance and the people’s expectation.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, made this known at a training session for the state workers tagged: ‘Integrated Strategic Planning for Succession, Talent and Performance Management’ organised by the Ministry of Establishments, Training and Pensions.

Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner of Establishments, Akintola Benson, said succession planning for organisations was in line with global best practices.

He said the state believes that succession planning was important to ensure the continued success of any organisation in identifying and developing talent, which will fill critical roles in future and in times of crisis.

He noted that organisations now focus on succession planning to ensure the leaders of the future are in place. Ambode pointed out that succession planning should be considered not just for high-level senior management roles, but also for technical roles.

He stressed that most companies fail to give the matter sufficient attention, even though the need for in-house candidates with essential skills to lead organisations may be greater than ever.

He noted that as leadership turnover in several large organisations averages about once in three years, companies that lack qualified succession candidates are forced to hire from outside.

The governor said organisations that make succession planning a perennial goal were better able to maintain performance while satisfying stakeholders’ demands.

He said he was confident that the training would enable the workers to adapt to benefit its public service. He said the state would painstakingly domesticate best global practice to avoid importing practices not workable under peculiar circumstances.
