The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has strongly urged the Federal Government to address the poor road conditions across the country to minimise the involvement of petroleum trucks in accidents.
The union equally urged the Federal Government to intensify public awareness about the dangers of scooping fuel from accident petroleum trucks on highways during accidents.
The appeal came following the loss of lives of some Nigerians, the destruction of properties and the injuries sustained by many communities during a petroleum truck accident at Gurara Local Government, Niger State, on Saturday.
In a statement, while extending their thoughts and prayers to the victims and their loved ones during the traumatic and challenging time, NUPENG said as a responsible organisation, it collaborates yearly with relevant agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Police, and State Traffic Management agencies, to train its drivers on road safety.
NUPENG President Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale said the union was committed to continuously training and retraining its members on best driving and safety practices.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected families and the entire Dikko community in Niger State. We commend the emergency responders who bravely extinguished the fire and rescued many injured victims.
“We urge all relevant authorities to provide the necessary support and medical care to those injured and to take measures to prevent future tragedies,” the statement said.
