As NUPENG distributes safety kits to PTD, vulnerable members

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has appealed to the Federal Government and all critical stakeholders to cut down cost of governance and build more infrastructures in the country.

The argued that the need became pertinent following the coronavirus outbreak, where majority of the medical infrastructure in the country are in a sorry state.

President of TUC, Quadri Olaleye, who lamented that Nigeria, cannot continue to waste money on medical tourism, that the country needed hospitals of international standard and other amenities necessary for its corporate development.

While commending some Nigerians and organisations that have donated to curtail the spread of COVID-19, the union urged that the gesture should also be extended to vulnerable Nigerians.

According to TUC, “Many Nigerians live on what they make daily. Such people may escape the deadly virus but may not escape the pangs of hunger. Hunger also kills! It is a very difficult time but we can overcome if we are willing to make sacrifices.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), in furtherance to its pledge to be on the frontline in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, has distributed safety kits to Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) and vulnerable members.

The safety kits include hand sanitizers, hand gloves, nose masks, which we had already been distributed across to all the union’s zonal offices in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Warri and Lagos.

Presenting the kits, President of NUPENG, Williams Akporeha, said “The union carefully engaged a competent pharmaceutical company with good track records known as ADCEM Pharmaceutical Company to produce specifically for our members across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.

“We are officially sending out to various operational locations, Drivers Stop-Over Spots and loading points customised hand sanitizers and other safety gears

“Conservatively, we will be sending out about a thousand of these items every week until the siege is over. ADCEM Pharmaceutical Company may not have the capacity to meet this demand and we are in talks with other companies to support this production.

“As you may be aware, we have 154 Petroleum Loading Depots across the country, but as we are talking we have 120 of these numbers  in active operation. Besides that, Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of NUPENG have about 300 places across the country that serve as their Stop-Over-Point for resting and recreation, we will be distributing these items to all these places too.”
