Eggheads converge on LASU for SONTA conference

The Department of Theatre and Cultural Studies, School of Creativity, Culture and Tourism Studies, Lagos State University (LASU) is set to host the 2025 yearly conference of the Society of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA) holding from September 2 to 6, 2025.

This is the first time LASU will host the prestigious gathering of theatre and film scholars, practitioners, and culture advocates from across Nigeria and beyond. “The conference theme, Technology, Intercultural Dialogue and the Future of the Performing Arts, reflects the urgent need to explore how digital innovation and cultural exchange are reshaping the landscape of performance in the 21st century,” said the Acting Dean of the School of Creativity, Culture and Tourism Studies, Professor Tunji Azeez, adding: “LASU is looking forward to welcoming delegates to what he promised would be a memorable and impactful conference.”

He continued, “the conference would feature keynote addresses, academic paper presentations, workshops, performances, and award ceremonies. Highlights include: Keynote address by renowned theatre scholar, Professor Ojo Rasaki Bakare, whose work has shaped the discourse on performance and cultural identity in Nigeria.”

The lead paper will be presented by celebrated filmmaker and media strategist, Mr. Femi Odugbemi, and international theatre scholar, Professor Nancy King, offering global and local perspectives on the future of the performing arts.

At the conference, there will be presentation of the SONTA Fellowship Award, the Distinguished Leadership Award, and the Pillar of the Arts and Creative Economy Award, honoring individuals whose contributions have significantly advanced the performing arts in Nigeria.

The LASU Theatre Distinguished Ambassador Award, recognising alumni who have demonstrated exceptional commitment.

The opening ceremony will be chaired by Chief Kayode Aderinokun, a respected patron of the arts and advocate for cultural development. The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, mni, will deliver the welcome address, reaffirming LASU’s commitment to academic excellence and cultural innovation.

To round off the conference, delegates will be treated to a scenic tour of Badagry—a historic town rich in cultural heritage—and a relaxing retreat at Suntan Beach, offering a chance to unwind and experience the beauty and hospitality of Lagos.

According to the President of SONTA, Professor Gowon Ama Doki, “This conference is a celebration of creativity, scholarship, and the power of performance to connect cultures and shape futures”.
