Lumumba, Davido, Omotola, others for Africa award
Professor Patrick Lumumba of Kenya, Nigeria’s David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, Omotola Jalade-Ekehinde, Zimbabwe’s Strive Masiyiwa are among the nominees for this year’s Africa’s Illustrious Award scheduled to hold at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Victoria Island on December 9. The event is partly powered by My Media Africa.
The award, which is in its third edition, will be presented to worthy Africans, who have helped to change the narratives in their endeavours in the last one year in technology, education, leadership, youth empowerment and entertainment.
Speaking at the dinner heralding the December 9 award night for excellence in Lagos and the plans of the organisers to ensure a hitch-free event, the Co-convener, Mr. Henry Iwuanyawu, said members of the panel who did the selection, are distinguished personalities picked across the continent to arrive at a verdict on who deserves nomination for the award
He added that the panel members were given the leeway to travel across Africa to have a first hand of those nominated by the public through the social media and others in order to do their own findings before they arrive at the names of the deserved nominees.
“We charged the panel members before the final list of nominees was submitted to us that they should do their findings without any fear or favour. We reminded them of what is at stake as the task ahead of them was a crucial one that the public will be looking up to them to discharge effectively well.
“We encouraged them to see the task given them as a legacy that will forever live in the minds of millions of Africans, who will trust in their selection process. And that history will record all their selfless contributions in assisting to honour others,” he said.
He added, “ the award is a worthy recognition bestowed on only few people who have contributed immensely to humanity and impacted the continent positively in their various fields. This award is not the usual award you see happening at different fora where friends are being honoured. To win this award, you must merit it.
“On December 9, the sons and daughters of Africa will converge in Lagos to receive awards in their respective fields. Transport and accommodation will be provided for these illustrious pillars of the continent. Even their entourage will also be taken care fully by the organisers of the event.
“The Vice President of Liberia, Jewel Howard-Taylor, is one of the awardees. She is coming based on what she has achieved for her selfless and dedicated contributions to her community. We are also expecting the Ambassador of Liberia to Nigeria and other dignitaries from Gambia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya and the rest.
The nomination award dinner held last week in Lagos was attended by celebrities, business promoters, sport personality, some of whom included former international, Ogbonna Kanu, Okey Bakassi, Uti Nwachukwu among other dignitaries from outside the country.
Meanwhile, the organisers have said that the event will be beamed to millions of African viewers via live streaming and on the television network on December 9.
