Queensland Academy holds art exhibition

Queensland Academy, Okota, last week, showcased some of its students’ art works to journalists at a press briefing to kick-start the Catch Them Young Art Project exhibition.

Holding in November 18, at the school premises, organisers say the event is part of activities to celebrate the school’s 30th anniversary scheduled to hold next year, 2018.

Among the array of works showcased were flora and fauna motifs on textile, tie and dye, collegiate, still drawing and paintings on chip and cardboards.

The school coordinator, Afolabi Omotosho, explained that art is in every facet of life and the school knowing the importance of the subject to man’s development has to make its students pick interest in it from early age.

He said: “I see artists as great and intelligent people because they think differently. I see art in everything around me and in every field of human endeavour. Art is life; it is culture. It is in the sciences, as well the humanities; we cannot do without it.”

He counselled participants to take it seriously, because they are not only studying to pass their exams, but are preparing for their future.

The facilitator, Dr. Kunle Adeyemi of Yaba College of Technology, said the school has to nurture its pupils now, groom them in different aspects of arts, so that, by the time they become independent, they would not only appreciate what they have learnt, but would make a living from it.

He said countries, including Kenya, the U.S. and others across Europe earn huge foreign exchange from art, which includes entertainment and Nigerians should emulate this.

Among the numerous outstanding works, the projects of Ezennia Ifeoma (B5), Chukwu Ebubeze (B6), Ifunaya Nwakunor (B6), Ekhagbai Gerald (SS1) and Chukwu Ekene (SS1) stood out, as they drew guests and teachers’ attention.
