Abia woos diaspora professionals, investors for sustainable development

Rev. Dr Ambassador Annie Onu

The Abia State Diaspora Commission is mobilising indigenes living abroad to deploy their professional expertise, explore investment opportunities, and build strategic partnerships to accelerate sustainable development in the state.
The initiative will feature a four-day Diaspora Global Homecoming scheduled for December 18 to 21, 2026, bringing together Abians from different parts of the world to engage with the state government, local entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.

The Chief Executive Officer and Executive Secretary of the Commission, Rev. Dr Ambassador Annie Onu, disclosed this while unveiling plans for the homecoming programme.
She said the initiative was designed to strengthen ties between Abia and its diaspora community while creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, business partnerships, investment and collaboration across critical sectors of the state’s economy.

According to her, the gathering will enable Abians living abroad to assess development initiatives in their homeland, identify investment opportunities and determine practical ways of contributing their skills, resources and professional experience to the state’s growth.
Onu described the homecoming as an opportunity for diaspora indigenes to reconnect with their roots, witness developments in Abia and support ongoing efforts to advance the state’s development.
“Our brothers and sisters in the diaspora who have heard about the achievements of the present administration are coming in their numbers to see the progress for themselves and identify ways to support the state,” she said.

She explained that the programme would also provide opportunities for diaspora participants to interact with local entrepreneurs, organic farmers and other business stakeholders, exchange ideas and explore investment opportunities that could benefit the state.
The engagements, she added, would expose participants to locally produced goods and services, while allowing them to identify products with export potential and establish partnerships capable of expanding their access to international markets.
The Commission’s head noted that many Abians living abroad had acquired valuable professional qualifications, technical expertise and business experience that could be harnessed to support development at home.

“We have professionals and highly skilled Abians doing great things in different parts of the world. They are eager to bring their knowledge and expertise back home and contribute to the development of Abia in various capacities,” Onu said.
She added that the homecoming would provide a structured platform for connecting these professionals with local institutions, businesses and development stakeholders to translate their knowledge and resources into practical benefits for the state.
The programme is also expected to facilitate interactions between diaspora investors and local content providers, particularly in agriculture, entrepreneurship and other sectors where partnerships could stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities.

According to Onu, the initiative goes beyond a ceremonial reunion, as the Commission hopes to encourage lasting relationships and concrete commitments that would continue after the participants return to their respective countries of residence.
The grand finale, scheduled for December 21, will feature an interactive session with Governor Alex Otti, during which diaspora participants will present their observations, discuss possible areas of collaboration and explore ways of supporting the state’s development agenda.

The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for the governor and members of the diaspora community to discuss how their professional expertise, investment capacity and international networks could contribute to Abia’s long-term development.
