The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), through its Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) has trained and graduated 25 farm machine fabricators in Taraba State to boost food security and job creation.
The graduates, who specialised in fabricating rice and cassava processing machines, were provided with starter packs to enable them commence operations immediately.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, the State Programme Coordinator (SPC) of VCDP, Irimiya Musa, emphasised that the initiative focuses on empowering local youths to create employment opportunities.
According to Musa, the programme offers comprehensive support for rice and cassava farming, covering production, processing, and marketing.
He praised Governor Agbu Kefas for his commitment to the initiative, particularly for the prompt payment of counterpart funding, which has contributed to the programme’s success.
Musa also commended the leadership of the state Polytechnic, for its role in training the fabricators, equipping them with essential skills to support rice and cassava farmers.
He urged the beneficiaries to use their starter packs to build sustainable businesses and contribute to food security rather than selling them.
“I want to caution you against selling the starter packs you have received. Follow the example of those we have trained before, who are now successful rice seed entrepreneurs,” he advised.
The National Programme Coordinator (NPC) of VCDP, Dr. Fatima Kabiru, noted that Taraba’s programme had made significant strides, training many young talents who are now excelling in the agricultural sector.
Represented by Mr. Musa Dalang, she commended the Taraba State government, describing it as a leader in the timely payment of counterpart funds for the programme.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Taraba Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Mrs. Salla Ali, praised the VCDP for its impactful initiatives in the state’s agricultural sector.
