The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has called for more recognition for app-based transport operators in Nigeria’s evolving transportation policy framework, stressing the need for regulations that protect drivers while promoting safety, technology and sustainable mobility.

The union made the position known as its delegation joined stakeholders at the opening of the 19th National Council on Transportation (NCT) in Abuja, where policymakers and industry players are deliberating on measures to develop an integrated transport system for the country.

The four-day event, organised by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, is holding from August 31 to September 3 at the National Judicial Institute Auditorium, Jabi Bypass, Abuja, under the theme, ‘Developing Effective Transport System for Nigeria: The Role of Integrated Transportation’.

A major feature of the council is the unveiling of the National Land Transport Policy (NLTP), which is expected to provide a framework for the development and regulation of land transportation in Nigeria.

AUATON’s participation is significant as app-based transport has become an increasingly important component of urban mobility, particularly in major Nigerian cities where e-hailing platforms have changed how passengers access taxis and how drivers earn a living.

The union said its presence at the council was aimed at ensuring that the realities of app-based transportation and the interests of e-hailing drivers are reflected in national transport policies.

The delegation is led by the Lagos State Chairman, Jaiyesimi Azeez, under the leadership of AUATON National President, Comrade Adedamola Adeniran, and National Women Leader, Nkechi Toluwani.

Other members of the delegation include Acting FCT Chairman, Comrade Evans Agada; North Central Task Force Chairman, Comrade Osas Benjamin; Lagos State Public Relations Officer, Iwindoye Steven; Lagos State Financial Secretary, Comrade Ijeomah Uche, popularly known as Danbaba; and Lugbe Branch Chairman, Obinna Nwasoro.

The participation of AUATON comes against the backdrop of growing debates over how Nigeria should regulate emerging mobility services without stifling innovation or placing excessive burdens on drivers.

While digital platforms have expanded transportation choices for passengers and created income opportunities for thousands of drivers, operators also face concerns around regulatory compliance, safety, vehicle standards, insurance, operating costs, driver welfare and the relationship between platforms and drivers.

For the union, the challenges require a transport policy that recognises app-based transport as a distinct and increasingly important component of Nigeria’s mobility ecosystem.

AUATON is expected to use the NCT platform to engage government officials and other stakeholders on issues including driver welfare, road safety, technology, regulation, sustainable mobility and the future of digital transportation.

The broader focus of the NCT on integrated transportation also presents an opportunity to examine how different transport modes can work together rather than operate in isolated regulatory environments.

The council brings together stakeholders across road, rail, maritime, aviation, cycling and emerging mobility systems to develop strategies for a more coordinated transportation system.

For Nigeria’s rapidly urbanising cities, such integration is particularly important as congestion, inadequate public transport, rising mobility costs and increasing demand for convenient point-to-point transportation continue to challenge commuters.
