FCCPC warns Air Peace against obstructing consumer rights probe

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has warned Air Peace’s actions of obstructing its ongoing inquiry into alleged consumer rights violations by the airline.

FCCPC is carrying out an investigation against the operations of the airline, following complaints from passengers.

Air Peace is accused of charging exorbitant fares, lack of transparency in pricing structures, and arbitrary flight cancellations.

Passengers said Air Peace ticket prices range from N500,000 to N700,000 for a one-hour domestic flight, a claim that sharply contrasts with a competitor offering similar services for as low as N80,000.

The FCCPC noted that such discrepancies raise serious questions about pricing practices in the domestic aviation sector.

The Commission, citing Section 127(1)(a) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018, stated that it is mandated to investigate unfair and exploitative pricing practices across all industries.

“Passengers are consumers, and their rights are inalienable and guaranteed under the FCCPA. It is the basis of FCCPC’s intervention,” the Commission said.

Complaints also extend to frequent flight delays and cancellations. Passengers reported an incident on 29 November at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, where a four-hour delay on an Abuja-Lagos flight sparked a protest, requiring the intervention of security personnel.

Passengers further alleged being charged a 50% surcharge to reschedule flights disrupted by delays or cancellations, adding to their grievances.

The FCCPC criticised Air Peace’s recent public statements, describing them as calculated attempts to undermine its investigation.

The Commission accused the airline of trying to distract attention from the issues at hand, adding that it has the authority under Sections 17(e) and 148(3)(c) of the FCCPA to conduct thorough inquiries into alleged violations.

The FCCPC reassured the public of its commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and promoting accountability in the aviation sector. It emphasised that no amount of blackmail or obstruction would derail the investigation and vowed to take appropriate action if the allegations against Air Peace are substantiated.

The Commission urged passengers to report any further instances of unfair practices, promising a fair and thorough review of complaints. It reaffirmed its dedication to fostering a transparent and competitive marketplace, ensuring consumers receive fair treatment and value for their money.
