The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has commenced preparations for the 1448H/2027 Hajj season following the completion of the return airlift of Nigerian pilgrims from Saudi Arabia for the 2026 pilgrimage.
The Commission announced that the final flight conveying pilgrims from Zamfara State was expected to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, marking the end of the 2026 Hajj operations.
NAHCON said the exercise recorded the successful transportation of Nigerian pilgrims to and from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, while efforts were made to ensure the welfare and safety of pilgrims throughout the process.
The Commission, however, disclosed that 12 Nigerian pilgrims are still receiving medical treatment in different hospitals in Saudi Arabia due to various health conditions.
It said the affected pilgrims were being monitored and that arrangements had been made to facilitate their return to Nigeria after they are discharged by medical authorities.
NAHCON Chairman, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, thanked God for the successful completion of the 2026 Hajj exercise and appreciated the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima towards the operation.
He also commended State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards, licensed tour operators, service providers, aviation partners, medical teams, security personnel, the media and Nigerian pilgrims for their contributions to the success of the exercise.
The Commission admitted that some challenges were experienced during the operation but said the lessons learnt would guide improvements in future Hajj exercises.
“As with every major operation of this scale, there were challenges encountered in the course of the exercise. Nonetheless, valuable lessons have been drawn and these will be applied toward improving subsequent Hajj operations,” NAHCON said.
Meanwhile, the Commission has officially started planning for the 2027 Hajj season as part of efforts to ensure early coordination and better service delivery.
NAHCON said a circular dated June 15, 2026, titled “Commencement of Preparations for 1448H/2027 Hajj Season,” had been issued to all Hajj managers in Nigeria.
The circular, signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Dr Mustapha Muhammad Ali, on behalf of the Chairman/CEO, directed State Pilgrims Welfare Boards, Agencies, Commissions and licensed private tour operators to begin preparations immediately.
The Commission said the preparations would follow the official guidelines provided by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
NAHCON added that the early commencement of planning was part of its commitment to improving future Hajj operations and strengthening coordination among stakeholders.
