Christian women have been urged to uphold godly character, dignity and integrity in their homes, churches and communities.

The call was made by the President of the Women and Girls’ Organisation, Diocese of Lagos West, Anglican Communion, Dr Lydia Odedeji, at the 27th Annual Women’s Conference in Lagos.

The three-day conference, themed “Dressed for Honour”, was co-hosted by the Oshodi and Ikeja Archdeaconries and attracted more than 1,000 delegates from across the diocese.

Odedeji said the theme, drawn from Proverbs 31:25, went beyond physical appearance, stressing that women should cultivate virtues that reflected their faith.

“Virtues such as humility, kindness, compassion, patience, wisdom and faith are the true garments that reflect the character of Christ and should be cultivated by every Christian woman,” she said.

She urged women to use their influence to build their homes and communities, promote peace and encourage others through their words and actions.

Odedeji also highlighted the role of women in shaping future generations, urging them to serve as positive examples to their children, families and communities.

She encouraged women to remain strong and hopeful in the face of challenges and to recognise their worth through their faith rather than societal expectations.

The bishop’s wife also urged women to replace bitterness, pride, fear and discouragement with forgiveness, humility, faith and hope.

She called on them to embrace their responsibilities as mothers, wives, mentors, leaders and role models, saying their lives should reflect their faith.

Odedeji commended the Lagos State Government for initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of children and young people, including rehabilitation and correctional facilities.

On state policing, she called for adequate constitutional safeguards to prevent abuse if the system is introduced.

She also urged Nigerians, particularly women, to participate peacefully in forthcoming elections and reject electoral violence, vote-buying, hate speech and misinformation.

Earlier, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Rt Rev Dr James Odedeji, cautioned Christians against worldliness and urged them to remain steadfast in their faith.

The conference featured health talks, Bible study sessions, discussions on contemporary issues and stage presentations.
