Facebook Marketplace marks 10 years in Nigeria, records over 835,000 listings monthly

Facebook Marketplace is celebrating its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of helping Nigerians discover products, sell items, and connect with buyers and sellers in their communities. Since its launch, Marketplace has grown into a trusted platform where everyday commerce thrives, from electronics and fashion to furniture and home improvement essentials.

Every month, Nigerians post more than 835,000 listings on Marketplace, reflecting the platform’s role as a hub for diverse products and services. Electronics lead the way with over 180,000 monthly listings, while home items and fashion each record more than 110,000 listings. Home improvement contributes more than 40,000 listings monthly. These figures underscore the breadth of opportunities available to buyers and sellers alike, making Marketplace a vital part of Nigeria’s digital economy.

Marketplace was created to give buying and selling a dedicated home on Facebook, simplifying the process of discovering products and connecting with potential buyers and sellers. Ten years later, that mission remains central to the experience.

Head of Communications, Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta, Oluwasola Obagbemi, said:
“People come to Facebook to connect over the things that matter to them, and buying and selling is part of that everyday activity. We built Marketplace because people were already trading in Facebook Groups, and we wanted to give that a dedicated home where it’s simpler to discover products and connect with buyers and sellers. As we celebrate 10 years, we’re recognising the communities who make Marketplace
useful every day.”

“We want buying and selling to feel as safe as it is easy, which is why safety tools are built in, and why we keep sharing the simple habits that help protect people.”

For buyers, Marketplace offers a streamlined way to search for specific items, compare available options, and speak directly with sellers. For sellers, it provides a simple platform to list items and reach interested buyers. Whether furnishing a room, refreshing a wardrobe, or selling a used gadget, Marketplace continues to connect people through commerce.

According to Facebook, safety remains a cornerstone of the Marketplace experience. Meta said it encourages users to review seller profiles, ratings, and other listings before proceeding. For in-person exchanges, users should meet in public, well-lit places during daylight hours and inform a trusted contact of their plans. Buyers are advised to inspect items before making payments, avoid suspicious links, and use official payment services. Any suspicious activity should be reported immediately.

As Marketplace celebrates its 10th anniversary, it continues to empower Nigerians to find what they need, sell what they no longer use, and build connections through safe, community-driven commerce.
