Speaking during the commemoration of the 2024 Global Safety Day, with the theme, ‘Learning Is Easy If We Are Curious’, the Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals, Keith Svendsen, highlighted the company’s focus on continuous improvement and fostering a culture of safety in ports operations.

Svendsen stressed the importance of learning from past incidents and near-misses to drive improvements in safety practices and promote a culture of constant improvement and collaboration among all employees.

He emphasised that workplace safety is a core component of the company’s operations, which goes beyond policies to ensure employees feel valued protected, and empowered.

“We are committed to ensuring that safety is not just a policy but a core value in all our operations. We learn from every incident to improve, making sure every individual feels safe in their work environment,” Svendsen stated.

The Terminal Manager at APM Terminals Apapa, Steen Knudsen, highlighted the role of curiosity in engaging employees and fostering knowledge that drives safety improvements.

“Curiosity is a key driver of engagement. When we engage with our people, we gain the knowledge that allows us to solve problems, improve skills and reduce risks,” Knudsen explained.

The Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager, APM Terminals Apapa, Felix Ugwuagbo, reminded employees, particularly frontline workers, that safety is a shared responsibility.

He encouraged them to be inquisitive, ask questions, explore safer ways to perform tasks and continuously seek improvements and clarity on safety measures.

On his part, the General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA),   Abdul Ibrahim Sani, commended APM Terminals Apapa for its exemplary leadership in safety practices as well as for setting standards for safety across the country.

Adding his support, the Port Manager of Lagos Port Complex Apapa, Adebowale Ibrahim, acknowledged the terminal as one of the safest and best-organised terminals in the region.

He highlighted the company’s influence in shaping national safety standards, reinforcing its commitment to a proactive safety culture.
