THE Khalifa Port Container Terminal (KPCT), located between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, will take delivery of new equipment and increase its overall annual container handling capacity from 1.9 million Twenty foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) to 2.5 million TEUs in 2016 and 2017, the terminal operator, Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT) has said.

According to American Shippers, new equipment for the terminal will include three additional ship-to-shore gantry cranes and 10 automated rail-mounted gantry cranes.
ADT explained that KPCT has the capability to further expand its annual throughput capacity to five million TEUs.

ADT projects a total of 1.5 million TEUs will pass through KPCT before the end of this year, a sharp increase from last year’s throughput of 1.14 million TEUs. The terminal is currently at 78 percent of its handling capacity.
KPCT, which was officially inaugurated in December 2012, supports approximately 20 weekly container line services and more than 50 international destinations.

ADT, whose core business is the management and operation of KPCT, is jointly owned by Abu Dhabi Ports, Mubadala and Mubadala Infrastructure Partners.
