The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) have forged alliance to further strengthen human capacity development in the maritime sector.

The Director General and Chief Executive of the Institute, Aminu Musa Yusuf, who led his team to visit the Managing Director, NPA, Hadiza Usman, in Lagos, sought mutual understanding to further increase the skills of NPA workers for greater efficiency.

Yusuf clarified the areas of concern on certification, declaring that the Institute has been duly affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.

He said: “We are indeed proud to say that we have trained countless NPA staff both in our short-term courses as well as long-term programmes such as the Post Graduate Diploma in Transport and Logistics as well as Masters in Transport and Logistics. However in recent times that patronage has been dwindling due largely to some misleading information about our programmes.”

He identified the contentious issue as insinuations that the two programme MTL and PGDTL have not been recognized by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC).

Yusuf said: “I wish to say in strong terms that the two programmes have been fully affiliated to ABU, Zaria and are being run jointly by the two institutions. Consequently, due process was followed in affiliating the programmes since 2011. Certificates for the two programmes are being issued by ABU.”

He emphasized: “We are a responsible organisation and people, we will not indulge ourselves in something illegal,”

He expressed optimism in renewing partnership and working relationship with NPA, while soliciting for support in its quest to improve on training facilities.

Usman said the critical role of NPA’s partnership with NIIT cannot be overemphasized and the Authority has in the past been training staff with NIIT to improve their performance.

She expressed hope that things will get better and in the quest for capacity building.
