THE stage is now set for the crowning of the winner of the second edition of Etisalat Prize for African Literature holding tonight at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos from 6p.m. Three writers – one Nigerian and two South Africans – are in the race for the top prize worth 15,000 British Pounds Sterling for their first published prose fiction works. They are Chinelo Okparanta (Happiness, Like Water – Granta Publication); Songeziwe Mahlangu (Pen Umbra – published by Kwela Books, imprint of NB Publishers); and Nadia Davids (An Imperfect Blessing – Random House Struik-Umuzi).

After the widely applauded success of debutant, Angola Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013, Africa is going to the 2015 edition with an unprecedented number of artists. Coincidentally, the increase in number of African artists, home and from the Diaspora going to the 56th Venice Biennale is coming in the year a Germany-based Nigerian, Okwui Enwezor is the Artistic Director of the Visual Arts Section of the event, a global bi-annual gathering of arts and architecture professionals.

When one of Nigeria’s ‘Living Legends’ and modernists, Dr Bruce Onobrakpeya exhibits under his representative outlet, Lagos-based Mydrim Gallery, at the 2015 edition of Art Dubai, UAE next week, a statement of consistence in native contents will be loud. Mydrim Gallery is the oldest active facility in the business of art promotion in Lagos just as Onobrakpeya is one of the early generation of formally trained Nigerian artists whose career have imparted on over five decades of the country’s art.

C.J. Fiery Obasi, the emerging movie director who helmed the ambitious movie Ojuju was last Saturday in Lagos presented with the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) 2015 Trailblazer Award. Obasi received his award from former Trail Blazer winner Ivie Okujaye at an impressive award ceremony held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos. The award will be Obasi’s third major recognition from the industry in less than 5 months. ‘Ojuju’, which he produced with Oge Ogwu was adjudged the best Nigerian film at the 2014 edition of the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Calabar, Cross Rivers state.

The Minister of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, Chief Edem Duke, who is also the Supervising Minister of Information, last week in Lagos said that the ongoing plan to redevelop the National Theatre and its surrounding fallow lands will not claim some of the tenants housed within the national theatre complex.

fHOWEVER, given that my job as a full-time university lecturer and researcher cannot always accommodate translation job demands from these various quarters, I felt the need to set the feet of some of my trainees on the highly saleable path of professional engagement with translation/interpreting. I have had course to have one or two of them accompany me on few of such professional assignments but cannot really say they are now fully ripe to do the job at the highest level even though they, to an appreciable extent, are comfortable in the art and act of translation/interpreting. In other words, what I am saying is that we are making progress but are not accomplished as yet.”
