Alumni play key role in institutional development – Prof. Ize-Iyamu

The Dean, School of Dentistry, University of Benin (UNIBEN), Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Ize-Iyamu has urged alumni of the institution to actively contribute to the growth and development of their alma mater as part of their corporate social responsibility.

She made the call in Benin on Thursday while delivering the opening address at the 14th Annual Scientific Conference, 10th Distinguished Lecture Series, and Alumni Reunion of the School of Dentistry, themed “Oral Health in Africa: The State of Affairs, Emerging Trends, and Future Prospects.”

Prof. Ize-Iyamu commended Distinguished Alumnus, Prof. Christopher Okunseri of Marquette University, USA, for his consistent support of the university and the School of Dentistry over the years.

“Alumni play a very important role in their alma mater. I encourage our alumni to partner with the School of Dentistry in needs assessments and in identifying landmark projects to enhance expansion, quality teaching, training, and mentorship,” she said.

Highlighting alumni contributions during her six months as Dean, she listed donations including an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus, dental loupes, rotary endodontic handpieces, mobile dental units, books, journals, computer training for non-academic staff, and renovations of the transcript room, BUDSA office, and student classrooms.

She also noted the school’s community service efforts, including a free oral health outreach at the Faculty of Law on August 13, 2025, which involved volunteers, donors, sponsors, and students.

Prof. Ize-Iyamu underscored the importance of research in universities, announcing the institution of prizes to promote excellence: the Prof. Obuekwe Prize ($100) for both undergraduate and postgraduate research, and the NDA Award (₦100,000) for the best case report in dentistry.

In his lecture, Prof. Okunseri lamented that oral health remains a low priority in many African countries, with half lacking formal oral health policies, a gap that hinders prevention, treatment, and promotion.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Edoba Omoregie (SAN), represented by DVC (Administration) Prof. Christopher Osubor; Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Wilson Sadoh; and the Edo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi, represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ihensekhien, among others.
