National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Lagos State has cautioned Prospective Corps Members, who are set to be officially sworn in on Friday, to be wary of the contents they create and share on social media which tends to damage the image of the scheme, warning that such action could attract serious consequences.

This warning was given by the Lagos State Coordinator, NYSC, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang, during a briefing with the PCMs who were just starting their 21-day camp, a mandatory programme that every Nigerian graduate must attend for three weeks as part of the one-year national service.

Her reaction followed the circulation of negative content on social media, where some PCMs according to her, have been sharing videos that portray the Lagos orientation camp in a bad light.

She maintained that the Lagos NYSC orientation camp remains one of the best in the country.

Addressing the concerns, the State Coordinator noted that the camp is currently undergoing a series of renovations before the commencement of the ongoing camp, noting that it is currently in its third renovation phase.

The Lagos State NYSC Coordinator acknowledged the efforts of the State Government in addressing the existing challenges, noting that in no time, the fourth renovation phase will begin immediately after the completion of the NYSC camp.

“At the moment there are Lagos corps members being posted to five different states. Please bear with us. This is the third phase of the renovation and the fourth will be after you leave the camp,” she appealed.

In a bid to provide corps members with a better camp experience, she announced that the 16,000 capacity project which has been ongoing , situated in Agbowa Ikorodu will be completed by the end of 2026.

The coordinator urged PCMs to remain focused, noting that numerous opportunities await them if they make good use of the programme.

Emphasisinh the importance of the NYSC scheme, she said that it is built on Four cardinals which include: orientation course, primary assignment, community development services and passing out parade, where certificates will be issued to deserving corps members that have served diligently.

“The importance of this camp is to prepare you for the service ahead. As you are here, we are going to mentor you under our different programmes outlined for you from the orientation to drills, lectures and entrepreneurship,” she stated.

She also advised the corps members to be security cautious by reporting any suspicious activities. “Security is key and we are well secured if you are suspicious of anyone, please alert us. Be your brother’s keeper,” she stressed.

Similarly, she cautioned the corps members to avoid engaging in activities that could lead to an extension of their service year.
