Education Consultant, Nneka Nwaokeafor, has underscored the importance of inclusive education, stating that all children, regardless of their background, learning style, or abilities, deserve equal access to quality education in a safe and respectful environment.
Speaking at a webinar themed: ‘Diverse Classroom,’ Nwaokeafor noted that diversity is an integral part of every classroom and cannot be removed from the learning experience.
According to her, classrooms naturally reflects the diversity of society, comprising students with varying learning capacities, linguistic abilities, and cultural backgrounds. She pointed out that inclusion fosters equity and fairness, ensuring that education remains a fundamental right accessible to all children.

“Inclusion not only benefits students but also helps teachers grow. Teachers thrive when faced with challenges, adapting and learning from the diverse needs of their students,” she said.
The educationist added that inclusive classrooms allow educators to focus on each child’s strengths, thereby facilitating both academic and social growth. Nwaokeafor explained that inclusion is particularly vital for children with special needs.
While acknowledging the role of specialised schools, she stressed that general and special education teachers should collaborate to create an environment where students would have sense of belonging.
“When children are excluded, they may suffer from low self-esteem and fail to develop holistically. However, an inclusive classroom builds their confidence and gives them a sense of belonging,” Nwaokeafor stated. She further highlighted the significance of a positive learning environment, one where children feel safe, happy, and eager to learn.
“A truly inclusive school environment is one where children may not want to go to school in the morning but do not want to leave at the end of the day,” she added
