FUEZ VC hails NELFUND as N163.9m loan rescues 3,215 students

In a major boost for higher education accessibility, the Federal University of Education, Zaria (FUEZ), has confirmed the disbursement of N163,991,400 education loan to its students by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yahaya Bunkure, made this known in an official letter of commendation dated September 3, 2026, addressed to NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr.

According to the breakdown released by the university, a total of 3,215 students benefited from the scheme, which covered registration fees for the 2025/2026 academic session. The disbursements spanned three months, from December 19, 2025, to February 27, 2026.

The document revealed that the highest single disbursement occurred on February 20, 2026, with N49.1 million released for 980 students, followed closely by a N39.9 million release for 766 students on February 27.

Prof. Bunkure noted that the funds were received into the University’s Treasury Single Account, adding that receipts were issued to all beneficiaries to ensure “accountability, transparency, and documentation.”

The Vice Chancellor applauded the Federal Government’s NELFUND initiative, stating that the loan has provided a critical lifeline not just for the students, but for their parents and the wider community during a period of severe economic hardship.

Beyond financial relief, Prof. Bunkure highlighted the broader societal benefits of the scheme. He stated that the loan is a strategic tool for national security, noting that it prevents “social unrest and similar vices perpetrated by idle population of our youth.”

“This noble initiative is a game-changer,” the VC wrote. “We sincerely appreciate and commend your exceptional contribution. We pray God Almighty to grant you the requisite grace and foresight to keep up to this good works.”
