German-language learners in Nigeria are set to have another option for internationally recognised proficiency certification as preparations advance for the introduction of the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD) examination in the country.

The development follows a visit to the Lagos office of Easyway German Language School by Mohamed Seddiki, coordinating representative for international ÖSD examination centres and Founder of the International Institute for Studies and Cooperation (IISC).

Seddiki met with Akande Marvellous, Chief Operating Officer of Easyway German Language School, as part of an inspection and assessment of the school’s facilities ahead of the proposed inaugural ÖSD examination in Nigeria.

The examination is scheduled to take place from October 29 to 31, 2026, according to the organisers, with plans for subsequent sittings after the inaugural exercise.

ÖSD, which stands for Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch, or Austrian German Language Diploma, is an internationally recognised examination system for German as a foreign and second language.

Its arrival in Nigeria could expand the certification options available to people studying German for education, employment, vocational training and other purposes.

German-language learners in Nigeria have sometimes faced challenges securing examination appointments, particularly during periods of high demand. The introduction of an additional examination pathway could consequently provide candidates with greater flexibility when planning their language studies and certification.

For Nigerians seeking educational or professional opportunities in German-speaking countries, recognised language certification can form an important part of admission, employment or immigration requirements, depending on the programme and destination.

Easyway German Language School said the proposed examination centre would seek to make the certification process more accessible to candidates in Nigeria.

Speaking during the inspection, Marvellous said the school would also provide preparatory classes for candidates registering for the examination.

According to him, the classes are intended to familiarise candidates with the examination structure and help them prepare adequately for their respective proficiency levels.

He urged German-language students to take advantage of the additional certification opportunity.

The organisers said ÖSD officials are expected to be present during the inaugural examination, while representatives of the German Consulate in Nigeria have also been invited to witness the exercise.

The October schedule could be particularly relevant to students currently progressing through German-language programmes and seeking to plan their certification without travelling outside Nigeria.

Beyond providing another examination date, the introduction of ÖSD could also broaden Nigeria’s German-language education ecosystem by increasing the number of internationally recognised certification pathways available locally.

The development comes amid continued interest among Nigerians in studying, working and undertaking vocational training in Germany and other German-speaking countries.
