A non-governmental organisation, Tech for the Street Initiative, has called for private and public sector collaboration to equip students in government schools with digital technology, aligning with the revolution in learning.
The convener, Olumide Ajayi, made the call at the inter-school Information and Communications Technology (ICT) quiz and debate for public secondary schools organised under district six of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, where 10 schools participated.
Ilupeju Senior Secondary School, Ilupeju Senior Grammar School, Ikeja Senior Secondary School, Ilupeju Junior Secondary School, Estate Junior Secondary School, and Ilupeju Junior Grammar School emerged winners.
Ajayi stressed the vital role technology plays in today’s world, saying whether one aspires to be a doctor or pursue any other profession, technology is essential.
He said: “A strong foundation is crucial. I firmly believe in establishing a solid base for individuals, regardless of the hype surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies. Before diving into complex concepts, students must understand the fundamentals.” He noted that the initial step involves learning basic computer skills and Microsoft packages, which serve as the building blocks.
“Once they grasp these essentials, they can progress to understanding coding principles, programming, and design. This includes exploring graphic design, as every child possesses both logical and creative abilities.”
Ajayi stated that his goal was to help individuals discover and nurture their inherent talents, even if they’re unaware of them, adding that by doing so, they can build on their existing knowledge and skills, fostering growth and development.
Besides, he called for the training of teachers in digital technology, noting that the current curriculum can be overwhelming.
Ajayi added that the foundation will continue to give support and necessary equipment for students’ training, while calling for collaborations from well meaning Nigerians
