Lancaster varsity to launch foundation programme

Lancaster University, Ghana (LUG), a pioneering international university campus in Africa, is set to launch a foundation programme in Nigeria, marking a significant step in its expansion plans.

The move is aimed at preparing Nigerian students for degree studies at LUG’s Ghana campus, offering them a world-class degree on African soil at a fraction of the cost.

The acting Chief Executive Officer and Provost of LUG, Dr Emmanuel Arthur, who disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the corporate headquarters of The Guardian, with other members of the team, said with Nigeria already supplying a significant share of its students’ body, LUG’s decision to launch a foundation programme in the country underscores its commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria.

He said the move is expected to increase access to quality education for Nigerian students, enabling them to achieve their academic goals without leaving the continent.

Arthur noted that the foundation programme, designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge, will be a stepping stone to degree studies at LUG’s Ghana campus.

He added that the initiative is expected to provide Nigerian students with a seamless transition to the university’s rigorous academic environment.

Arthur disclosed that the university currently runs seven programmes, including law, business, computer science, and politics, with plans to add up to six more next year.

The provost pointed out that the LUG’s model offers students a unique opportunity to earn a UK degree in Africa, with tuition fees significantly lower than those in the UK.

He stated that the university’s emphasis on small class sizes, personalised academic tutors, and mandatory i
nternships has yielded impressive results, with graduates excelling at top universities worldwide.

Over the years, Arthur noted that the university has attracted a diverse student body, with Nigerians making up a significant proportion.

“The institution’s track record among Nigerian students is impressive, with several graduates going on to achieve great success in their fields.”

By offering a world-class education that is both accessible and affordable, Arthur said the institution is poised to continue making a lasting impact on the continent’s educational landscape.
