The Rotary Club of Lekki Golden, Rotary International District 9112, has renovated and furnished a Junior Secondary School classroom at Badore Community Primary School in Eti-Osa Local Council of Lagos State, while donating 2,300 jotters and exercise books to pupils and students.

The interventions, unveiled on Friday, September 25, 2026, were part of activities marking Rotary’s Basic Education and Literacy Month.

The classroom renovation was funded with a N2 million grant from Rotary District 9112 and a N567,500 contribution from the club’s Immediate Past Service Projects Chair, Akinlabi Akintayo, who also executed the construction work.

The work included the installation of an approximately 84-square-metre grooved PVC ceiling, repairs and repainting of seven metal doors and windows, rehabilitation of cracked walls and repainting of the classroom.

The club also supplied new desks and benches for pupils, as well as tables and chairs for the teachers’ office.

Onward Paper Mill Ltd sponsored the learning materials, while the Rotary Club provided 1,000 biros and 120 Oxford mathematical sets.

The programme also featured financial literacy sessions conducted by representatives of IGI Insurance and GTI Group, who taught the pupils about savings, investment and insurance.

Other activities included sessions on character development and hygiene, while a reading plan was introduced for the pupils, with follow-up activities scheduled to sustain their interest in reading.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, commissioned by the club’s Immediate Past President, Dr (Mrs) Christiana Okenla, and President Abiodun Olawale-Cole, the club president said the intervention was designed to provide lasting benefits to generations of pupils who would use the classroom.

“Every child deserves a safe, bright classroom and something to write in. This classroom will serve every new JSS 1 class at Badore for years to come,” he said.

Olawale-Cole said the project reflected Rotary’s theme for the year, “Create Lasting Impact,” and thanked the district, sponsors, club members and other supporters for their contributions.

The club’s Administrator, Chidera Okafor, is also sponsoring a full year of school uniforms for a new Badore pupil whose family could not afford them.

The club president provided food and drinks for about 50 pupils who participated in the literacy activities, with additional support from a Friend of Rotary, Mr Leke, as well as Rotarians Ulari and Marvel.

At Ilasan Secondary School, Ikate, Lekki, which hosts the club’s Interact Club, the Rotary Club donated books and other learning materials to students. Interact is Rotary’s service programme for young people aged 12 to 18.

The club said it would work with the school to monitor attendance and the use of the renovated classroom each term.

It is also considering a larger grant to renovate other classrooms at the school that require ceilings and furniture, with discussions expected to continue with Onward Paper Mill Ltd and other sponsors on the next phase of the intervention.
