Taraba varsity staff threaten strike over payment of arrears, others

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Taraba State University (TSU) chapter, has issued a two-week ultimatum to Governor Agbu Kefas and the university management to address unresolved issues outlined in a Memorandum of Action (MoA) or face a total and indefinite strike.

The warning was contained in a communiqué issued after the union’s congress, jointly signed by SSANU Chairperson Comrade Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka and Secretary Mamki Joshua Atein.

The union accused the state government of failing to implement the MoA signed on January 25, 2025, which stipulated a meeting with SSANU leadership in the first week of February to agree on a payment plan for salary arrears.

They described the delay as a “clear violation” of the agreement and warned that such inaction could trigger the resumption of the strike it suspended on January 26, 2025, after over a month of industrial action.

SSANU’s demands include the payment of outstanding September and October 2022 salaries, settlement of withheld portions of June, November, and December 2022 salaries, payment of 90% of accumulated Earned Administrative Allowances (EAA), and activation of the approved State-Defined Pension Scheme for TSU staff, including benefits for deceased and retired workers.

The communiqué noted that a reminder letter was sent to the government on February 14, 2025, but no action was taken.

“The inaction of the Taraba State Government and the University Management is a clear violation of the MoA. Failure to meet our demands within two weeks from August 7 will leave the union with no choice but to resume the earlier suspended strike,” it stated.

The union said it would act “in line with its constitution and extant laws” if the ultimatum lapses without resolution.
