Chevron donates power bikes to FRSC

The Arrive Alive Road Safety Initiative (AARSI) in partnership with Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited (A chevron Company) has donated three police power bikes to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for enhancement of the corps patrol operations along Lekki-Epe highway.

The power bikes were donated on last week in Lagos during an awareness campaign against the use of worn-out tyres in the country.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi said that the use of expired tyres, worn-out, sub-standard, re-treaded, stitched, part-worn tyres as well as poor tyre maintenance, are dangerously compromising highway safety.

“Nigerians are the importers, marketers, maintenance technicians (aka vulcanises) as well as the users of these tyre that are daily causing wanton loss of lives and property on our highways” Oyeyemi said.

He stated that passengers boarding commercial vehicles should endeavour to check the tyres for basic quality indicators, in case of bad tyres, you should bring it to the driver’s attention and insist on compliance and if they refuse to comply, it should be reported to the FRSC on 122 or 08077690200. “I have issued my directives to my officers to commence aggressive enforcement immediately this period of enlightenment is over. Call them, I assure you of their prompt respond. Let it be clarified that the enforcement thrust will target all different tyre conditions that could jeopardise safe driving: expired tyres, worn-out tyre, wrongly fitted tyres, sub-standard tyre among others”, Oyeyemi said.

Furthermore, he stated that the FRSC is collaborating with agencies, organisation and individual in proactive interventions and enlighten.

“Standard organisation of Nigeria and Tyre and Rim Sealers Association are current on intensive operation to rid the market of Tokunbo and substandard tyres through prevention of importation and seizure of those already imported” he said.

The Director of Star Deepwater Petroleum limited, Jeffrey Ewing said: “Nigeria is one of the three African countries participating in the Arrive Alive program pioneered by Chevron. Through the partnership, we have deployed regular training programs for drivers, provided helmets for motorcycle riders and organised enlighten programs for truck drivers and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers”.

Speaking also at the event, the General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), Sejebor Dafe Stephen commended the efforts of the co-venturers on the Agbami field: the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, FAMFA Oil Limited, Petrobras and Statoil.
