The Federal Government has rolled out a new welfare package for non-teaching staff in federal universities, approving increased hazard, responsibility and work-related allowances following months of engagement with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).

 

 

Under the revised package, which takes effect from January 1, 2026, hazard allowances have been raised by 35 per cent across eligible salary grades, while directors will begin receiving an annual responsibility allowance of ₦600,000 for the first time.

 

 

The approval, contained in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), also provides for higher responsibility allowances for registrars, bursars, deputy registrars, deputy bursars, deputy directors and heads of sections.

 

 

Laboratory hazard allowances for workers on CONTISS 1–5 have increased to ₦243,000 annually from ₦180,000, while employees on CONTISS 6–15 will now receive ₦486,000, up from ₦360,000.

Beyond hazard pay, the government approved upward reviews of field trip, teaching practice, industrial supervision and Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP) allowances across the various salary levels.

 

It also announced that the Provision Tools Allowance has been merged into the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance, while laboratory students-to-staff ratio supplementation will now be treated under excess workload provisions.

 

The enhanced welfare package follows an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026, as part of efforts to improve the remuneration of university non-teaching staff amid prevailing economic challenges.
