Jibrin accepts NNPP expulsion, hints at political recalibration

Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, the federal lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji constituency in Kano State, has formally accepted his expulsion from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), describing the decision as one he receives “in good faith.”
Jibrin’s expulsion, announced by the NNPP leadership in Kano on Sunday, was reportedly in response to alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement personally signed and titled “My Membership of the NNPP Has Come to an End,” the lawmaker maintained that he had no prior notice of any offence or invitation to defend himself before the party’s organs.

Reacting to the decision, Jibrin insisted that his recent media interviews with Channels TV and DCL Hausa, which were cited by the party as grounds for disciplinary action, did not contravene the party’s principles.

“I strongly believe the contents of the interviews I granted a few days ago in English and Hausa should not warrant such a heavy penalty, because they align with the core principles of our party and movement, which allow for dissenting views, overtly or covertly,” he said.
He further criticised the process of his expulsion, highlighting the absence of an opportunity to present his side.
“No invitation was extended to me to defend or explain myself, thereby neglecting the very important principles of fair hearing, due process, and justice—principles the NNPP loudly demands from others,” Jibrin added.

While expressing regret that he could not continue his service under the NNPP, the lawmaker signalled a willingness to move forward.

“While I would have loved to remain in the NNPP and continue my service to our people and country, despite differences on some issues (which I will address in detail in due course to avoid any misunderstanding), the party has made and announced its decision,” he stated.

On financial matters, Jibrin appealed to the party to avoid legal proceedings regarding alleged unpaid dues, affirming his readiness to settle any outstanding obligations. “I am appealing to the party—there is no need to go to court, as I have never refused to pay my dues. I respectfully request the party to send me the invoice, and I will promptly make the payment,” he pledged.

Although he did not specify his next political platform, Jibrin indicated that he would carefully evaluate options before deciding his future course. He encouraged his supporters to prepare to accompany him in his forthcoming political endeavours.
The development marks a significant shift in Kano State’s political landscape, as Jibrin’s exit from the NNPP may influence alignments ahead of future elections, particularly given his profile as a former Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation and a prominent voice within the party.
