College rewards winners of national mathematics competition

The Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) has rewarded winners of its 18th edition of the yearly national mathematics competition with cash and other prizes.

The Nigerian Tulip International College (NTIC) has rewarded winners of its 18th edition of the yearly national mathematics competition with cash and other prizes.

The competition, which was organised by the school in conjunction with the National Mathematics Centre (NMC) is a yearly event that started in 2003 with the aim of encouraging students in the study of mathematics.

A female pupil of Masbel Divine International School, Anambra State, Ifunanya Nwanegbo, who emerged overall winner of the competition, got a cash prize of N400, 000, while the teacher and the school got N200, 000 and a photocopy machine respectively.

The first runner up, Tejiri Esemitodje of Mind Builders School, Imole Phase 1, Lagos State, got N300, 000 with the teacher getting N100, 000, while the school was rewarded with a desktop computer.

The second runner up, Chibuzo Obiyo, of Pleroma International School, Rivers State, went away with N200, 000, while the teacher and the school got N75, 000 and printer respectively.

Winners from eight to 14 went away with 50,000 and their teachers got 30,00 each, while those from 15 to 28 positions and their teachers also got various cash prizes.

Speaking during the presentation of prizes in Abuja, managing director of NTIC, Mr Fevzullah Bilgin, said the competition was aimed at promoting effective teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary school level.

He said: “Right from 2003, over 210,800 pupils had participated in the competition spread across the 36 states and we have offered 180 pupils 100 per cent scholarship, which include tuition and hostel fee for six years.”
