Sam Ukala to speak at writers’ workshop in Abraka

Professor Sam Ukala will next Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Hall A, Delta State University, Site 3, Abraka, at 12:noon, mentor students interested in creativity, with Dr. Sunny Awhefeada, Head of the University’s Department of English and literary Studies as chief host. The workshop is where undergraduate students undergo apprenticeship in creative writing in the university. The Creative Writers’ Workshop (CWW) offers opportunities for students to hone their artistic skills.

Ukala, a multiple award-winning writer, theorist, scholar, whose radical scholarships on Dramaturgy and Theatre Studies are testimonies of his painstaking and meticulous research, will motivate the students to tell their our stories, through dialogues, narratives, and verses, and engage with the Nigerian experience, the compelling economic, social and political calamities ravaging the entity we called Nigeria.

At the Creative Writers’ Workshop, we believe in the power of words to engender rapid development, transformation and technological advancement. As the universally acclaimed poet, Niyi Osundare puts it thus in his “Invocation of the word”, a poem in his 1999 volume of poems titled The Word Is An Egg, “In the Beginning was not the word/In the Word was the Beginning”.

DELSU is an enabling academic environment for creativity to blossom. And CWW is one of the inherent enablers.
* Comrade Oreh is the Director of Information of CWW, Abraka.
