Dr. Hadiza Theyra-Enias, a renowned oncologist affiliated with Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital and Kaduna State University, has successfully launched the first-ever comprehensive breast cancer screening program in Kaduna State.
Funded by Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital and well-meaning Nigerians, the project has set a new standard for early cancer detection and is rapidly being emulated by other hospitals across the region.
The groundbreaking initiative, designed to combat the increasing incidence of breast cancer and address the critical gaps in early detection and healthcare education, provided screenings to over 500 women, including 300 clinical breast examinations, 170 ultrasound scans, and 90 mammograms.
Beyond these services, Dr. Theyra-Enias organized health education sessions that reached more than 400 participants, significantly raising awareness about the importance of early detection and regular screenings.
Dr. Theyra-Enias’s project is instrumental in changing the landscape of cancer care in Kaduna State, where late-stage diagnoses have historically led to poor treatment outcomes and high mortality rates.
By providing accessible and comprehensive screening services, the initiative aims to decrease these rates and improve the quality of life for women in the community.
“Early detection saves lives, and our goal with this initiative was to ensure that more women have the knowledge and resources they need to take proactive steps against breast cancer,” said Dr. Theyra-Enias.
“We are seeing a remarkable increase in awareness and early detection rates since the project’s inception.”
The success of this initiative has not only enhanced the hospital’s reputation as a leader in innovative healthcare solutions but also solidified Dr. Theyra-Enias’s status as a trailblazer in the medical community.
Her efforts were recently recognized when she was awarded the prestigious ACLI AORTIC Cancer Leadership Award, acknowledging her contributions to cancer research and leadership in implementing impactful health initiatives. Statistically, she is among the few female oncologists in the country to have launched a project of this nature, influencing other hospitals in the country to follow suit.
The impact of Dr. Theyra-Enias’s work extends beyond Kaduna State, serving as a model for other regions grappling with similar healthcare challenges. Her initiative is a testament to the power of dedicated healthcare professionals committed to making a significant difference in the lives of those they serve.
As other hospitals begin to adopt similar programs, Dr. Theyra-Enias’s vision for a broader fight against breast cancer continues to inspire and pave the way for future innovations in the field of oncology.
