In its efforts to achieve zero emissions on campus, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) recently unveiled solar-powered, electricity buses on campus. The event also saw the unveiling of the university’s updated logo, symbolising its commitment to environmental responsibility and modernisation.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who disclosed this at a media parley, said the vehicles were donated by two of the institution’s alumni, who own Ogata Global Resources and Chart Eco Global Services. Ogunsola emphasised the importance of maintaining the university’s commitment to good air quality and minimising pollution.

In addition, she highlighted the university’s decision to update its logo, stating that the old one no longer represented the UNILAG brand.
“We want our partners and stakeholders to use the updated logo,” she added, opening a new chapter for the institution in its pursuit of sustainability and innovation.

Ogunsola further explained that though ensuring a pollution-free environment would take a little longer, she stated that the university was starting by collaborating with Ogata Global Resources Limited, who are alumni of the university.

“The vehicles are electric cars, but they also have a backup of solar energy and it’s for public transportation around the campus. Besides, it will cost less; so we are taking care of students and staff welfare, while also taking care of the environment,” she said.

Chairman, Ogata Global Recourses Limited, Henry Eke, said the “UNILAG zero emission drive” was a way of giving back. According to Eke, the team currently has eight buses on ground, but hopes to increase the number with time.

He said the idea of coming to UNILAG was to help students and the university community mitigates the economic challenges by reducing their transportation costs and ensuring a cleaner environment for learning.
