The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) is working closely with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on the adoption of an electronic fare collection system.
Managing Director of the NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this during a visit to LAMATA’s rail infrastructure, where he was received by LAMATA’s Managing Director, Abimbola Akinajo.
Opeifa and his delegation toured key facilities, including the iconic Marina Train Station, Blue Line Independent Power Plant (IPP), Red Line’s Oyingbo Station and the Security Control Centre.
The team’s visit was guided by Akinajo, alongside the Technical Adviser for Public Transport Rail, Olasunkanmi Okusaga, and other senior officials.
Speaking during the visit, Opeifa expressed appreciation for the sustained collaboration between NRC and LAMATA, stressing the need for greater synergy to deliver efficient and seamless rail services.
He said the NRC was developing a ticketing system that would integrate the federal payment gateway with the state’s electronic payment system to ensure greater convenience for commuters.
Akinajo emphasised that LAMATA remains focused on connectivity and seamless integration, especially at strategic interchanges such as Agbado and Agege, which will provide commuters with direct links to other key parts of Lagos.
She credited the agency’s achievements to the unwavering support of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu under the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, which prioritizes transportation and mobility.
Akinajo highlighted that since its commencement, the Blue Line has consistently achieved over 99 per cent uptime, underscoring the efficiency and reliability of Lagos’ modern rail system.
