We live in a stressful environment.

Through the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives, we are exposed to toxins some by our own choices and others by the environment. So every now and then, detoxing is a great idea.

Detox is a subject of huge importance, In fact, performing regular body cleanses and detoxes are a core principle of my beliefs in health, wellness and fitness.

You might wonder, what exactly is a detox? Simply put, a detox is a process in which a person makes lifestyle changes to clear their body of toxins.

These lifestyle changes typically involve abstaining from certain harmful things and optimizing body processes. Some changes are temporary, such as following a cleansing diet; others are permanent.

We are in constant contact with harmful organisms and pollutants. They’re in our water, in our food, and in the air we breathe, it is very difficult to get away from them.

Research states that the source of many health issues is the toxins that have built up in our bodies over the years. The body has a natural detoxification process.

The liver is the first line of defense against toxins in the body, which acts like a filter in preventing toxic substances contained in foods from passing into the blood stream. Then there is the colon, its main role is to flush out toxic chemicals before they can do any harm.

The kidneys are constantly working, filtering the blood and getting rid of toxins in the form of urine. You may be surprised to learn that your skin is part of your excretory system, the skin helps in elimination through the sweat glands.

The purpose of sweat is to regulate body temperature, but it’s a multifunctional system. When sweat passes through your sweat glands, it takes toxins with it. But the incredible thing is we can also can help our body perform these processes with the help of a detox program.

Some of the benefits of a detox program can help the body’s natural cleansing process by resting the organs through fasting, stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body, promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys, and skin, improving circulation of the blood and refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

There are various types of detoxification programmess and detox recipes, which really depend on your individual needs.

Some programmess believe in a three-day detox, others suggest a five-day detox, but I personally adhere to an eight-day schedule because studies shows that it takes the body about that time to clean the blood.

I believe in fasting on liquids either in juice or smoothie form for the first three days, then continuing with a properly planned five-day detox diet to allow the digestive system to rest.

There are various detoxes that one can do. There’s the fruit and vegetable detox, smoothie cleanse, juice cleanse, sugar detox, etc. It is important to include food with detoxifying agents.

For example, fruits are high in liquid-content which helps the body wash out toxins. Also most fruits are extremely easy to digest and are high in antioxidants, nutrients, fiber, and important vitamins.

Raw vegetables whether juiced or eaten raw, turmeric, carrots, spinach, ugu, water leaf, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, garlic, onions, beets, provide a great foundation for a healthy diet.

The combination of these foods will help your liver purge toxins during the cleansing process.

Tea is full of powerful antioxidants fantastic for reducing inflammation in your body. Drinking tea will also help to hydrate your body. The antioxidants in tea kill off the damage-causing free radicals in your body.

This will keep them from attacking your cells, which makes green tea a favourite. It is packed with antioxidants; green tea washes toxins from the system via its liquid content.

It also contains a special type of antioxidant called catechins, which are known to increase liver function.

Exercise also promotes detoxification. Not only does exercise make you feel better, but it’s an easy way to help your body in its natural detoxification process and this process gives all systems of the body a boost.

As you exercise, the blood circulates throughout the body, bringing nutrients to all the organs and muscles.

As you do aerobic exercise you build up a sweat and toxins are released through the pores of the skin. It’s important to rinse off after heavy sweating to help rid the body of those toxins.
