The Medical Director of Our Friend Hospital, Ogba and Dr. Isa Abdul-Mujeeb has attributed some of the causes of the insecurity challenges in Nigeria to the breakdown in the family system.

He noted that the adoption of Islamic virtues in homes has become imperative to restore family values.

Abdul-Mujeeb who delivered a lecture at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos Information Chapel, themed ‘Home as the bedrock of a better society’ linked the rising surge in the country’s insecurity to the breakdown of the family system.

“The outrage of crime in the country happens due to the breakdown of the family system. On that note, Islamic values are missing in the home and parents have a lot to do in ensuring the home foundation is built with the virtues of Islam. Unfortunately, today, most people in the family do not even value their family names again, rather the money or economic gain that is what they focus on.”

He added that security is paramount in Islam as growth and prosperity in material and spiritual fields are not possible to achieve without security.

“In Islam security is number one, even Prophet Ibrahim (AS) prayed for the security of Mecca and when Prophet Muhammad (SAW) got to Medina, he prayed for the safety of Medina. As a matter of fact, if any country or state wants to leave long, they must give attention to security.”

He emphasised the impact of insecurity on citizens’ health, noting that inadequate sleep due to insecurity can lead to insomnia, cancer, kidney disease and others.

“For instance, if you are going to bed at night and you are not sure of your safety, you can never have a good sleep. Once you lack sleep, you are at risk of being hypertensive. Once you lack sleep, you are at risk of cancer or kidney disease, mental health issues and others,” he declared.

He urged journalists to be wary of the kind of information disseminated to the general public.

“To manage information, journalists play key roles, so, they should desist from disseminating information that will burn the polity, but rather give well processed information to the society.”
