GMO: The good, bad and the not so ugly – Part – 1

Like many, I was uninformed and joined the anti-GMO bandwagon without fully understanding what it is or being knowledgeable about it. As we all know, knowledge is power; the more you seek, the more you learn.

Genetically Modified Tomato

With hundreds of debates going on about GMO foods and oppositions from Anti-GMO advocacy groups getting tougher by the day, I have always been inquisitive about this topic and concerned with the continuous intensity of the ongoing conflict. It’s not a coincidence my first article as a contributor is about GMO and I predict there would never be an end to the discussion.

Like many, I was uninformed and joined the anti-GMO bandwagon without fully understanding what it is or being knowledgeable about it. As we all know, knowledge is power; the more you seek, the more you learn. And the more articles and books I read on Agriculture, Food Security and Scientific Research, the more I feel puzzled about where I stand. There are grains of truth in both sides of the argument.

If your mind is already set on your beliefs, then you may not find this article interesting but I want to urge that you read it still.

I wrote it with the intent to provide information for open-minded individuals, those willing to learn and see things from both perspectives.

I know some of my friends will probably send me a message after reading this piece. They would try to convince me to change my stance.

My brother will probably be the first or my friend who recently tagged me on an anti-GMO campaign on Instagram. I didn’t like that by the way. (Instagram method of showing your approval of a post) I wondered if she knew my stance on this issue. I honestly don’t know and have always been on the fence, meddling with both sides but of late, I have made a choice, which will be clear once you are done reading.

Let’s be honest, there are lots of uninformed people out there who jump on any movement without carrying out any research or might not have access to adequate information. It can be frustrating to decipher through the mass information online and determine what sources are credible or which ones are not. What exactly does GMO mean?

“Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques (i.e., a genetically engineered organism) meaning a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified using recombinant DNA methods”. “This new science creates unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods”.

In terms of food or how it applies to farming, this is done for plants or crops to improve their durability, through situations such as drought tolerance, disease resistance, or to increase their nutritional value. These changes are also aimed at increasing crop yield and lowering costs. To better understand this, it basically means we are altering the gene of a plant to prevent it from disease and increase its nutritional value by engineering a crop’s immunity through the application of basic science. I am not a Nobel Peace Prize Scientist, neither do I claim to be an expert in Gene Transfer (Disclaimer: I only had to take one Genetics class) but isn’t Vaccination similar? Please correct me if I am wrong. We vaccinate a child to prevent them from disease in order to build their immune system. “Vaccination is the administration of antigenic material (a vaccine) to stimulate an individual’s immune system to develop adaptive immunity to a pathogen”. Do people realize the ideology of GMO’s and Vaccines are more similar than we want to admit? How do you get to be anti-GMO but pro Vaccines? It makes me wonder, are we just uncomfortable with change? Or are we making decisions based on emotions rather than scientific research and results?

THE GOOD
Everyone is aware that the world population will increase to 9 billion people by 2050; global food production will have to double to support the population increase and prevent starvation. Research has shown that GMO crops are easier to grow because they have stronger ability to resist pests, a common problem in farming. This attribute helps farmers with producing greater amounts of food.
GMO plays a role in providing farmers with potentially larger profits and it’s also economically efficient. Farmers will have a higher likelihood of increased income, which provides financial stability, re-investment into their business and an opportunity to educate their children.

Farmers have low production cost by having reduced use for pesticides and herbicides, using less chemical and fewer losses sustained from crop disease resistant.

To sufficiently feed the growing population of the world, deforestation is needed. But with genetically modified animals and crops, the use of this method will be minimized, meaning we can increase food production on our same land size.

Biotechnology has the potential to create more nutritious crops by having the ability to manipulate food and increase desired nutrients. An example is the introduction of Vit A (Golden Rice), which could possibly save the world from starvation and malnutrition.

I know the Golden Rice is currently focusing on Asia but in “Nigeria VitA deficiency affects nearly one in three Children under the age of five, increasing their vulnerability to immune system weakness and blindness”…. Harvest Plus. Hence why Vit A Cassava was introduced to Nigeria but I refuse to digress.

Better calorie consumption and dietary quality means farmers are healthy and can work harder as a result of increased income
It will decrease food prices, advanced crops and lower costs can lead to cheaper food. This will certainly help families who cannot afford to buy food, buy nutritious food and eventually prevent starvation

THE BAD
GM crops pose a threat to farmers who grow non-engineered crops. Inter-breeding from neighboring farms cannot be controlled. Example: Corn experts claimed Mexican corn (criollo) was bound to mix with improved varieties from the United States over the years. Experts claimed contamination in Mexican corn varieties was due to smuggling of GM seeds in the Mexican markets. If you are surviving on a harvest and you have a choice to plant between a corn seed that will give you 10tons per hectare or 20tons per hectare, you will take the 20tons seed presumably.

Yewande please go back and do some research on the effects of the GMOs food on the human body system. You just painted the beneficial side of the GMO

People like you with little or knowledge on this subject continue to question scientific evidence through that says that GMOs are not safe. For example, the Norwegian government, via The Norwegian Biotechnology Advisory Board (NBAB), Commissioned by the Norwegian Environment Agency late last year to develop a guidance document in line with the Norwegian Gene Technology Act, with the aim to assess the sustainability of genetically modified (GM) herbicide-tolerant (HT) plants.

The report examines a dossier that was submitted to the Brazilian government by Monsanto, and it outlined how the research was flawed and lacking a tremendous amount of data. The study also pointed out a myriad of other concerns with regards to GMO Intacta Roundup and Ready 2 Pro soybeans, the examination concludes that the science behind the cultivation of this crop is simply inadequate. The report highlights a range of methodological weaknesses as well as the problem of incomplete information, research, and science on Genetically Modified Crops. Something various countries and scientists around the world have already suggested and sceptical about.

The global resistance against Genetically Modified Crops is growing at an exponential rate and this will continue. Few months ago, a group of Noble Laureates opined that GM foods could be hazardous, and 19 new countries an already long list of nations to completely ban, or at least place severe restrictions on, GMOs — and the pesticides that go with them.

In a recent study, scientist found a clear relationship between severe liver and kidney damage, as well as hormonal disturbances, in rats fed GM maize in conjunction with low levels of Roundup — levels that were below those permitted in most drinking water across Europe. The rats also developed large cancer tumours. I think it is worthy to keep in mind that we are talking about GM crops which are sprayed with billions of toxic chemicals every year. These chemicals have been linked to a number of diseases, ranging from autism and Alzheimer’s disease to cancer and more.

Stop writing on something you have little or no knowledge about. GMO is produced to generate the much needed profit for the companies at the expense of the consumers. I need to remind you that Genetically Modified Organisms are unsafe for human consumption, and that they pose significant environmental risks, too.

Are you for real? This entire post is total nonsense.

      • Author’s gravatar

You think that only because you are a pro-GMO PR propagandist. What you are saying is total nonsense.

        • Author’s gravatar

No…not quite. I think that because the whole post is conspiratorial BS with. Othing to back it up what so ever. That why I think that.

But thank you for your input.

          • Author’s gravatar

It is not conspiratorial BS to call out the BS that you and the other industry astroturfers use to try and confuse and deceive the public about the facts. The only conspiracy is the one that you and your astroturf team mates have to deceive the readers with your industry propaganda and lies.

I do it as a public service.

People need to know who hey can trust. After all the industry pays many to try and confuse and deceive the public with GMO pesticide industry disinformation and lies

          • Author’s gravatar

Oh yes.. and we all know how trustworthy you are… right?

          • Author’s gravatar

Smart people with an open mind who are willing to verify the truth I speak for themselves are not influenced by self serving agenda driven GMO pesticide industry astroturfers who try and sell propaganda and lies instead of truth.

May I respectfully request the author read: Planting the Future by the European Academies Science Advisory Council 2013 before attempting to write part two.

    • Author’s gravatar

I wouldn’t bother. Robert Wager is a pro-GMO activist and spokesperson who trolls social media 24/7 to promote antiscience, pro-agrochemical industry, pseudoscience. You can find lots of his biased, pro-GMO, antscience comments on GMO articles over the last 5 years or more. He works in the field, and his salary depends on more funding from the biotech/agrochemical industry.

    • Author’s gravatar

“The latest from European National Academies of Science” (EASAC)
      https://www.easac.eu/home/reports-and-statements/detail-view/article/planting-the.html

Look at the authors in this report.

Reidunn Aalen – has a patent on plant gene for use in genetic engineering. https://www.freshpatents.com/Reidunn-Aalen-Oslo-invdira.php

Ervin Balazs – “former founding general director of the Agricultural Biotechnology Center Gödöll,, lead a unit on molecular virology and genetic engineering of crops”

Ralph Bock – “Director of the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of Plants”,

Ian Crute : “has had a 40 year career in crop research”

Michel Delseny : Laboratoire Génome et Développement des Plantes

Torbjörn Fagerström : President of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

Evert Jacobsen : “WU Plant Sciences. Subdivision, Laboratory of Plant Breeding.”

Ivan Kreft : “agronomskih znanosti, redni profesor genetike na Biotehniški fakulteti”

Birger Moller : “Center for Synthetic Biology”

Ewen Mullins : “15 years experience in US & Ireland in Plant Biotechnology.”

Enrico Porceddu “docente presso la facolta’ di Agraria dell’Universita’ di Viterbo.”, etc.

So you referenced a biased report written by people who have a conflict of interest since they are involved in the genetic engineering of plants.

      • Author’s gravatar

Hilarious… it’s biased because it was written by people with expertise in biotechnology. Yah.. we should probably make sure people writing important scientific papers have no experience in the field they are writing on what so ever…. right??

Do you ever stop to think about what you’re writing??

        • Author’s gravatar

Written by people who depend on biotech funding, is what you really mean. (And coming from another pro-GMO activist and spokesperson whose been promoting the biotech/agrochemical industry for the past several years, you lack credibility.)

          • Author’s gravatar

Oh yes… of course, Rob. They are experts in the biotech field, so therefor they must “depend” on biotech funding. Clearly, any expert in any subject is unreliable because… well… because they’re an expert.

            Sounds legit.

          • Author’s gravatar

          • Author’s gravatar

Well… seems you’re wrong again. It’s called bias if you can show their their position in life unduly influenced the paper. It’s NOT called bias to rely on expert analysis of a complex subject.

Similarly, relying on experts to interpret complex scientific information is not the same thing as a conflict of interest.

In other words, unless you can show evidence of undue influence, then you’re just wrong.

But by all means… keep trying.

More BS as expected! Do you think they would write a paper on biotechnology showing the harm their products have been shown to cause? Yup, harm they do cause, science has proven this and it’s a fact! And, you are actually the brainwashed “nut-bag” who believes what biotech pseudoscience tells you.

          • Author’s gravatar

Your “sky is falling” nonsense hasn’t come true in over 20 years. But by all means… keep trying.

          • Author’s gravatar

            Utter nonsense! Wash, rinse, repeat!

          • Author’s gravatar

Yup. Nonsense that you nutters have been repeating for 20 years.

And it’s a wonder why nobody takes you seriously.

          • Author’s gravatar

Only to you pro-GMO, biotech loving and brainwashed nutters. Nobody takes you trolls seriously.

          • Author’s gravatar

Oh yes…. only “pro-GMO, biotech loving and brainwashed…” and the rest of the scientific world. But who’s counting?

You’re just so out of touch with reality.

Well….sounds like you got it all figured out. Let me know how that works out for ya!

          • Author’s gravatar

Must be tiring for you having to rely on conspiracy theories to support your weak arguments.

“GMOs are nothing more than a scandal and fraud”

If GMOs are frauds does that mean they are not really genetically modified or does it mean they are not really organisms?

  • Author’s gravatar

I would love to see her address the investigative report by the New York Times nonetheless that said and i quote “About 20 years ago, the United States and Canada began introducing genetic modifications in agriculture. Europe did not embrace the technology, yet it achieved increases in yield and decreases in pesticide use on a par with, or even better than, the United States, where genetically modified crops are widely grown.” —- Nigerians should look at the data for themselves and judge…

Data from biased, biotech BS is not honest data. Your sites are not reliable sources.

        • Author’s gravatar

It’s not data from “biased, biotech BS”. It the very same data referenced in the NY piece above in addition to USDA data.

You really should try reading the references before commenting on them.

          • Author’s gravatar

I was referring to your bogus links!

data are data. they might be incorrect or completely wrong. But if you claim that the data provided by jason are incorrect you have to explain why and put another set of more credible data on the table. If your only argument is that Jason’s data must be wrong because they do not fit your narrative. By the way Andrew Kniss has used the same dataset as the Ny Times article.

Weedcontol freaks is an industry astroturf site that contains agenda driven prophaganda.

The Grist piece is by known industry propagandist Nathanael Johnson and is just more industry PR prattle and disinformation.

Typical from known industry operative Jason.

It is the opinion of most independent people who will avoid industry controlled astroturf sites like the ones you always link to to try and support your industry propaganda and lies.

If the information is legitimate it can be found on legitimate sites. You come up empty when you link to PR controlled sites.

          • Author’s gravatar

            Nope.

I look for sites with truthful information. GM Watch and Sustainable pulse have a good reputation for truthfulness. I have never cited Natural News.

Not only that. The same type of people who use this technology rely on synthetic fertilizer. Midwest is having a huge issue with water contamination and the people are getting sick from this.

      Negative Effects of Synthetic Fertilizers
Synthetic fertilizers have long-term negative effects. Synthetic fertilizers kill beneficial microorganisms in the soil that convert dead human and plant remains into nutrient-rich organic matter. Nitrogen- and phosphate-based synthetic fertilizers leach into groundwater and increase its toxicity, causing water pollution. Fertilizers that leach into streams, rivers, lakes and other bodies of water disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Synthetic fertilizers increase the nitrate levels of soil. Plants produced from such soil, upon consumption, convert to toxic nitrites in the intestines. These harmful nitrites react with the hemoglobin in the blood stream to cause methaeglobinaemia, which damages the vascular and respiratory systems, causing suffocation and even death in extreme cases (when blood methaemoglobin level is 80 percent or more). Synthetic fertilizers damage the natural makeup of soil in the long term. Plants that grow in overly fertilized soil are deficient in iron, zinc, carotene, vitamin C, copper and protein.

My dear Yewande, I believe that you write these articles to help and encourage people in their health so with this knowledge I would encourage you to do a proper research into these claims of “GOOD” that you have made. Please understand that people are reading and will read this in the future so be careful with what you endorse. Please note that there are a lot of fake and unverified research papers and articles that are published on this GMO issue even on credible health and food related journals. I would recommend that you go to Youtube and type “GENETIC ROULETTE” and watch a thorough documentary that was done on GMO’s, you will see that it is not wonderful as you think it is. Since you gave the analogy of GMO’s and Vaccines I will give you another analogy of GMO’s and the Human Genome Project. Do you consider it ethical that scientist are currently trying to clone a human being? Taking different good genes from man and using it to recreate a clone. That is what GMO is… Please do your research well before you post on things you don’t know about.

    • Author’s gravatar

First of all, what is wrong with cloning a human? There are millions of clones walking around all over the world now, we normally call them identical twins though.

“GENETIC ROULETTE” was written by Jeffrey M. Smith, a flim flam man and a con artist, who knows nothing about GMOs.

Can you tell us specifically what is wrong with the facts exposed in this book or are you going to take the troll road again to slime the author because you are not capable of discussing the details and facts from the book?

        • Author’s gravatar

What book? We were discussing a movie. Ted is getting dumber by the day.

this movie or are you going to take the troll road again to slime the film maker because you are not capable of discussing the details and facts
            from the movie?

Losers always start in with the Ted fiction when they are losing on the

            trolls.

          • Author’s gravatar

Well the title of the movie was not spelled incorrectly, but other than that it is all wrong.

Why so angry today Ted? No pudding pops today in the old folks home?

          • Author’s gravatar

Razorjack is correct. You are sliming the author because you are not capable of discussing the details and facts from the book/film.

          • Author’s gravatar

          • Author’s gravatar

You are sliming the author because you are not capable of discussing the details and facts from the book/film. Now you are deflecting from the the fact that it is about you and your mindless industry agenda and has nothing to do with razorjack or me or any other truth teller.

You should learn the difference between truthfulness and hypocrisy.

Telling the truth is not hypocrisy.

          • Author’s gravatar

I do know the difference, you are a hypocrite, your arguments are weak and you know it.

          • Author’s gravatar

You are no one to judge the strength of my arguments, baby troll.

If you have specific criticisms of specific points I make, please point them out. Otherwise you are just spewing more odorous BS to keep your hand in he conversation.

          • Author’s gravatar

My specific criticism is that you asked someone to address an argument rather than criticize the source of the argument but in a previous post you criticized the source of Jasons argument rather than address the argument made.

            Hence you are a hypocrite.

Who are you to say I cannot judge the strength of your argument, we are on a public forum I can do what I want, and unlike you I am actually educated in the field I am debating.

          • Author’s gravatar

You are a troll and you are trolling.

          • Author’s gravatar

But you still are a hypocrite, I am the one who tried to discuss GMO safety with you but you would rather call people names from multiple accounts.

          • Author’s gravatar

          • Author’s gravatar

Due to you joblessness I don’t rate your opinion very high, you talk rubbish about hard working scientists life work yet you have contributed nothing to society, you call farmers “fools” for protecting their crops with pesticides yet you have never grown a commercial crop and do not understand the stress involved. Go get an education, get a job, work hard for several years then come back here and let someone tell you that your work is rubbish, your a paid shill and industry troll then see how you feel.

Why is it that jobless people are the ones who think they know how the world works better than everyone else?

So do you have a job or not?

          • Author’s gravatar

          • Author’s gravatar

Just say no, it is the correct answer

      • Author’s gravatar

hyperzombie, do you have an investment or vested interest in GMOs, their production or distribution? Or do you work in a GMO producing company or their affiliates? If you do, then I understand your shortsightedness but if not, then do a proper research in these issues devoid of the plastic and lifeless research pasted on so-called government agency journals that have been bought over. Also, what makes Jeffery M. Smith “flim flam” ? Is it because he’s not a big name in the industry or because he has been persecuted by the goons of GMO companies who have tried to discredit him for telling on them? Following the crowd isn’t always where the answer is but on the path despised and rejected by the same crowd. As for the issue of cloning, I will correct you on this: Identical twins are not clones but actual human beings born of a woman and not created in a lab. WAKE UP!!!
