As part of efforts to boost education in the country, Rotary International, District 9110, comprising Lagos and Ogun States, under its District Educational and Welfare Endowment Fund (DEWEF) has raised the sum of N25 million.

DEWEF offers scholarship to brilliant but indigent students in universities and polytechnics, from 200 level. They are given the sum of N100, 000 a year.

The donation was at the instance of the District Governor, Bola Oyebade, who did not only encourage donors but has been a source of encouragement through the example he has laid.

“Asking others to contribute was a simple thing. I was only asking them to emulate what I have been doing many years and to support me. Not only have we made the highest contribution, we have also doubled what used to be the highest contribution and I am assuring you that this would expand our programme for DEWEF ultimately as I believe we can extend the scholarship scheme to over 200 students,” he said.

Chairman, Board of Trustees, Dr. Olawale Cole, said that DEWEF started with a donation of just N25, 000 and has received a boost of up to N25 million, which showed the commitment of Rotarians and its partners.

“With this fund, we have not only boosted education but had also trained over 100 corps members to complement government’s efforts at managing disasters.

Chairman, DEWEF fund raising committee, Raf Abanum, said the donation would assist indigent students in both Lagos and Ogun States as well as victims of disaster.
