Bauchi governor commissions mammography centre for cancer treatment
The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed has commissioned a state-of-the-art cancer treatment centre at the General Hospital, Azare.

Mohammed said that the centre was donated by Total Energies in partnership with NNPCL.He lauded the donors for the life-saving project targeted at the common man.
Represented by his deputy, Auwal Jatau, Mohammed said that the commitment of TotalEnergies and other sponsors to improving the health and wellbeing of people of Bauchi is commendable.
He said such partnership illuminates the path towards sustainable development and enhanced healthcare services. “It is in times like this that support is required from our partners knowing the realities of the current global economic predicaments, particularly developing nations like Nigeria,” he said.

The MD/CEO and Country Chair, TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, Mr. Matthieu Bouyer, said that the facility is the latest – Senographe Pristina 3D that delivers 3D imaging at the lowest radiation exposure with superior diagnostic accuracy for detection of breast cancer.
He said that the facility can examine over 120 patients per day, ideal for screening exercises. “It offers digital breast tomosynthesis and stereotaxy for enhanced image-guided biopsy. Enhances patient ergonomics and comfort to allay strain and anxiety,” he said.

Bouyer said that the donation of the mammography centre to Bauchi State was borned out of the need to detect breast and other forms of cancer early, reduce the fatality risk, and mitigate the gaps in access to qualitative healthcare in that region of Nigeria.
“Over 120,000 new cancer cases are recorded annually in Nigeria, according to a December 2023 report by the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment. We are committed to changing that situation, and that is why we have delivered this project, which we strongly believe will provide access to affordable early diagnosis and detection, aid the prompt treatment and follow-up of patients, and ultimately save lives.”

The Commissioner for Health, Sani Dambam warned against misuse of the facility while applauding the donors for the life-saving project. He commended the donors for choosing Bauchi State among the befitting states and pledged full support to the maintenance of the facility.
