FCTA partners fertility centre to boost reproductive healthcare
The Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), is partnering with the Nordica Fertility Centre to improve access to quality reproductive healthcare for Nigerians.
The administration is working with the centre to introduce High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), which is a minimally invasive medical procedure that uses ultrasound waves to treat certain conditions, such as tumors, uterine fibroids and tremors.
Speaking during a virtual press conference during the Abuja Reproductive Health Week, the Acting Director, General Hospital Management Board, Dr Olugbenga Bello, expressed the determination of the FCTA to ensure improvement in the lives and well-being of women.
He said that the collaboration is in line with the agenda of the current administration to bring health closer to the people. Bello said a lot of cancers are being discovered early and in younger people who still desire to preserve their fertility, adding that with technological advances, people now have treatment choices.
Earlier, a Consultant Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Chief Executive Officer of Nordica Fertility Centre, Dr Abayomi Ajayi, said the week will focus on reproductive health, including fibroid and onco-fertility, which has to do with preserving fertility during the management of cancer in women.
He said, “Not only should we tackle the problem that cancer poses, but we should also be able to preserve the fertility of these women and girls while going through cancer care.”
Ajayi observed that the week will also bring together specialists in the various areas of interest to help residents gain the required knowledge, which will assist them in making informed decisions on their reproductive health issues.
