The Ondo State Government has expanded its ‘Ilera Loro’ scheme with the aim of including free healthcare services for sickle cell patients across the state.

With 216 sickle cell patients already captured in the scheme, the non-governmental organisation Ignite Sickle Cell Initiative has been advocating for their inclusion in the state since 2021.

According to the Director General of the Ondo State Health Insurance Scheme, Dr. Abiodun Oyeneyin, the initiative was in collaboration with the Ondo State Ministry of Health and stated that, with the development, the healthcare needs of sickle cell patients will be addressed and the overall health equity of the state will be improved.

He said: “This initiative is not just about treating a disease; it is about restoring dignity and hope to those who have been marginalised by their health conditions.”

The founder of the Ignite Sickle Cell Initiative, Ms. Kemi Oguntimehin, who stressed the importance of the development, said, “Today, we witness a dream that many of us have fought for becoming a reality.”

“For too long, sickle cell warriors have been sidelined in our healthcare system. This expansion is a critical step towards ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve.”

Oguntimehin, who hailed the state government for its commitment to addressing the needs of sickle cell patients, added that “this initiative not only provides free healthcare; it sends a powerful message that our community matters. We are no longer invisible.”

“This inclusive approach ensures that no patient is left behind, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic status. We must continue to advocate for more systemic changes to the registration of sickle cell warriors so that sickle cell care is prioritised across Nigeria.”

One of the beneficiaries of the scheme, who expressed his gratitude over the initiative, said, “This is a game-changer for us. For years, we have fought for recognition and support, and now we finally see our efforts bearing fruit. This scheme will save lives and improve our quality of life.”
