In a landmark event observing both World Sight Day and International White Cane and Safety Day, the Resource Center for the Blind (RCB) reaffirmed its commitment to eye health and support for the visually impaired.

The event attracted over 200 participants,including law enforcement personnel, underscoring the importance of eye health, visual impairment awareness, and the critical role of the white cane in fostering independence.

The event’s dual themes—“Eyecare Everywhere” for World Sight Day and “Together We See: Building a Community of Support for the Visually Impaired” for International White Cane & Safety Day—emphasized RCB’s dedication to ensuring accessible eye care and building supportive communities for individuals with visual impairments.

Temitayo Ayinla, Executive Director of RCB, opened with a compelling address, stressing the significance of early intervention to prevent blindness and eye disease, as well as the crucial role of law enforcement in enhancing accessibility for the visually impaired.

“Today’s symposium not only educates the public and law enforcement agents on the importance of their support but also highlights the vital need for proactive eye health measures. Prevention and early treatment are our strongest tools in reducing the rate of preventable blindness, and everyone here plays a part,” Ayinla stated.

RCB’s initiative offered free eye screenings, health checks, and an educational session for law enforcement officers from the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps. These programs aimed at equipping attendees with the knowledge and sensitivity needed to assist visually impaired individuals more effectively.

Dr. Olubunmi Akinrinade, an ophthalmologist from Lagos General Hospital, Odan, led a session on maintaining eye health and preventing vision loss. Her presentation underscored the importance of routine eye exams, a message closely aligned with RCB’s mission to encourage regular check-ups and early treatment to curb preventable blindness.

Highlighting white cane awareness, the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of the Blind spoke directly to law enforcement officers, advising them on ways to support individuals with visual impairments. He emphasized the white cane’s role in fostering independence, urging officers to recognize its importance in mobility and safety.

The event had a meaningful impact, with over 100 participants receiving free reading glasses, another 100 receiving eye medications, and 30 individuals scheduled for free cataract surgeries. These services, provided in partnership with Eye Foundation, represent a vital step in addressing vision care needs and preventing blindness within the community.

Special Guest of Honour, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, praised RCB for its holistic approach. He acknowledged that through the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs, the state government partners with RCB to broaden the reach of eye health services and enhance support for residents with disabilities.

The event’s emphasis on law enforcement engagement was especially timely, given Nigeria’s eye health statistics. According to the Nigeria National Blindness and Visual Impairment Survey, roughly 4.25 million adults over 40 have moderate to severe visual impairment or blindness. RCB believes that by raising awareness and promoting early intervention, the risk of preventable blindness can be significantly reduced, while improved law enforcement support can enhance the safety and mobility of
visually impaired individuals.

Supporting organizations such as Jubly Health Concern Initiative, which provided general health checks, along with Lotus Bank and Lotus Capital, demonstrated a collaborative, cross-sector approach to promoting eye health and awareness of visual impairment.

RCB’s event marked a considerable advance in its mission to make eye care more accessible and preventable blindness more avoidable. By combining free medical services with educational outreach targeting key community stakeholders, RCB is pioneering a comprehensive model of community health and awareness.
