Insecurity, low patronage mar luxury bus business
Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON) has identified insecurity and low patronage as some of the challenges confronting its members’ businesses nationwide.
The body also said that for the country to progress, these challenges needed to be addressed by concerned authorities.
ALBON stated this in Enugu during its biennial general meeting where members elected a new national executive committee to drive the transport owners’ body for the next two years.
Speaking on the challenges confronting the body, the newly-elected President, Nonso Ubajaka, called on the Federal Government to urgently tackle them.
He explained that low patronage was a result of the harsh economic realities, in addition to COVID-19 pandemic.
Besides, he urged the transporters not to despair, but brace up to tackle the hurdles frontally.
Before his election, Ubajaka, the Managing Director of Izuchukwu Transport Ltd, was the Vice President of ALBON. He succeeds Prince Emeka Mamah, who is now a Commissioner in Enugu State.
The Chairman, ABC Transport, Frank Nneji, also retained his position as the Secretary of the body.
Ubajaka assured members that his executive council would give priority to collaborating closely with the government to protect the interests of the association and its members.
He emphasised the need for ALBON leadership to always interface with various tiers of government (local, state and federal) and their agencies to ensure that the transporters are encouraged to play their vital roles in the nation’s economy.
In his acceptance speech, Ubajaka lauded his predecessor for piloting the affairs of the association commendably in the last four years.
He assured that his executive would continue to build on the achievements of the founding fathers of ALBON.
“In the next few weeks, I will call upon you for us to have a comprehensive review of the current bus fares of the association as it affects our individual and collective financial records.
“Tangential or central to price review is the work of the Taskforce Committee, which as you know, is key to any price implementation. Therefore, the Taskforce Committee will be re-organised to ensure that approved bus fares on all routes nationwide are well enforced and implemented,” he said.
