Group urges judiciary to ignore calls for boycott of EFCC cases
The Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre) has called on the judiciary not to give any consideration to calls for boycott of cases brought by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The group urged the judiciary to ignore such ignoble meddling in affairs of law enforcement agencies capable of throwing the country into chaos.
This is in response to calls by some Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and individuals to boycott EFCC cases.
But HEDA, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, expressed concern over the calls, saying that such are unconstitutional, against the rule of law and capable of undermining the fight against corruption in Nigeria.
According to the organisation, the EFCC has been instrumental in the fight against corruption and any attempt to undermine its work will only promote corruption and impunity.
The organisation noted that the calls are not in the interest of Nigerians and Nigeria, which is tantamount to sabotaging efforts of government in its fight against graft.
Suraju also called on all stakeholders to work together to promote transparency, accountability and good governance in Nigeria, adding that it is only by working together that the country can achieve development and progress.
The body also urged the CSOs to desist from making such spurious calls, which it described as “precipitating unnecessary unconstitutional acts because of pecuniary interest.”
