Some residents of Mafoluku, Orile Oshodi, Lagos, and its environs, have expressed dissatisfaction at the failure of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) PSP operators to collect their waste regularly. Residents of Branco, Raji, Pelu-ola, Agbo-ola, and Mafoluku Road, among others revealed that the PSP operators have not been consistent in coming to pick their waste.
Yet these residents claimed they have been paying the LAWMA levy as at when due. It was ascertained that every tenant of each house pays between N1000 and N1500. They claimed that the PSP operator rarely comes to collect their waste, which has been the trend for a while now.
Nnamdi Ibezim, a resident of Raji Street, said: “To be honest, it has been very poor. They don’t come frequently. We don’t know when to expect them, as they come once in two or three months. And that is how it has been since the beginning of this year. We want them to give a day a week so that we will know when to bring our dirt outside. And they should increase their frequency when they come to take refuse. We can’t be having them come once every three months.”
Another inhabitant of Pelu-Ola, Henry Nwaribe, who just moved into the community, said: “I got here May. The collection of waste has been bad and it keeps getting worse.”
But a staff of the PSP operator, Bucklad Nigeria Limited, who pleaded anonymity because he does not have authority to speak, attributed the shortcoming to faulty trucks and delay in offloading waste at the landfills.
He said the company has resumed operation in some parts of the community, and will eventually cover its jurisdiction.
