Moral discipline, core value of faith-based varsities, says VC
Vice Chancellor, Augustine University, Ilara- Epe, Prof. Steve Afolami has identified moral discipline as one of the core values of faith-based tertiary institutions. Prof Afolami while justifying the fees being charged by private universities in the country said development of moral values coupled with qualitative education system is imperative for a better Nigeria.
He spoke at the second matriculation ceremony of the institution, owned by the Catholic Church which took place at the university auditorium. The vice chancellor who reviewed the activities of the university in the last two years said the institution is committed to the overall development of its students, to make them change agents in the society.
“Once these students are admitted, what we do is to correct and relate with them in a friendly manner and this among other methods has been quite helpful. The university also offers that moral formation that can help the nation.
On its activities since it took off, Prof. Afolami said the institution ran its first session hitch-free in spite of the country’s harsh environment. “It has computerized systems that enable students to handle their assignments from wherever they are; a system that enables the student to monitor his performance in continuous assessment ahead of examinations; a system that publishes students’ results two weeks after the last paper has been written; a system that enables parents to view and follow up their children’s results in examinations; a system that rewards excellence through half-tuition scholarship awards as incentive to sustainable scholarship.
In his address, the former Archbishop of Lagos, Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie described education as a key investment every parent must undertake for an assured future.
“When it comes to school fees in private and faith based universities, people always say it is too high but quality education is not cheap all over the world. Education is an investment, the quality you add to it often determine the yield in the long run.
“The idea of Augustine University came up during my time and this is one of the reasons I have devoted my time in making sure I nurture and support it. The institution focuses more on character and learning.
