Nigerian scholar Enuma Ezeife and UConn Team clinch APICS Business Competition

Nigerian-born scholar Enuma Ezeife has once again showcased the brilliance of Nigerians in the global business space after being part of the University of Connecticut (UConn) team that emerged victorious in the APICS Northeast Student Competition. The prestigious event, held in Albany, New York, is a major platform for business students to demonstrate their ability to solve complex real-world challenges.

The APICS competition is renowned for testing participants in strategic decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical thinking. Competing against some of the best business minds from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Rutgers University, the University of Massachusetts (UMass), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the UConn team—comprising Enuma, Cheng “Ted” Jin, Alexandra Buchanan, and Avinash Chugani—secured the first-place prize in the graduate student division. Their ability to apply business principles effectively and develop innovative solutions set them apart from the competition.

The APICS competition presented students with a simulation-based business challenge, requiring them to manage a virtual juice company. The teams were responsible for making critical decisions across key business areas, including finance, operations, marketing, and corporate strategy, with the goal of optimizing profitability and long-term success.

Reflecting on the experience, Enuma described it as a rigorous yet rewarding test of business acumen that required the team to function like real executives.

“The competition was an intense exercise in strategic thinking and decision-making. Every move we made impacted our company’s performance, so we had to be precise, analytical, and forward-thinking in every aspect of our business operations.”

The challenge demanded that participants analyze market trends, anticipate economic shifts, and develop competitive strategies while managing risks effectively.

“It wasn’t just about playing with numbers—it was about understanding how business dynamics work in a fast-paced, ever-changing market. We had to ensure our company remained competitive while making smart investments and managing resources efficiently.”

Beyond the financial and operational aspects, teams were also required to defend their strategies in front of industry professionals and a panel of judges, emphasizing their ability to communicate and justify business decisions.

“Presentation and persuasion were just as critical as strategy. We had to articulate our vision clearly, defend our business decisions, and show that our approach was sustainable and profitable. That experience reinforced the importance of strong communication in the world of business.”

For Enuma, being a Nigerian excelling in the United States makes this achievement even more significant. She sees it as proof that Nigerians have what it takes to succeed in the global business world and hopes her success can inspire young professionals to pursue leadership roles in international business and finance.

“As a Nigerian, this victory means a lot to me. It proves that we can excel anywhere, and I hope my journey inspires more young Nigerians to dream bigger, work harder, and see themselves thriving in global industries.”

She also emphasized that Africa’s presence in business leadership is growing, and young professionals should leverage their skills, embrace opportunities, and become major players in international markets.

“The world is evolving, and we need more African voices in key business decisions. Whether it’s finance, technology, marketing, or entrepreneurship, there is room for us to lead and make an impact.”

While Enuma played an integral role in the team’s success, she is quick to acknowledge that the victory was a result of collective effort. She expressed deep appreciation for her teammates—Cheng “Ted” Jin, Alexandra Buchanan, and Avinash Chugani—who each contributed unique insights and skills to the team’s strategy.

“This win was a team effort. Ted, Alexandra, and Avinash were incredible to work with, and each of us brought something valuable to the table. Our ability to collaborate, share ideas, and challenge each other’s perspectives is what led us to success.”

She also extended gratitude to UConn’s faculty and mentors, whose guidance and encouragement played a crucial role in their preparation.

“Our professors and mentors pushed us to think critically, refine our approach, and always strive for excellence. Their insights helped shape our strategy and gave us the confidence to perform at our best.”

Although UConn has won this competition in previous years, this year’s victory was particularly significant, as it came under a new format that demanded more complex decision-making, adaptability, and real-time strategic thinking. Enuma believes this experience has further prepared her for a successful career in business leadership and corporate strategy.

“This competition reinforced my passion for business and strategy. The lessons I’ve learned will stay with me as I move forward in my career, and I look forward to applying them in real-world business challenges.”

With this achievement, Enuma continues to establish herself as a rising talent in global business, demonstrating that young African professionals can play a leading role in shaping industries and economies worldwide.

“This is only the beginning. The world of business is full of opportunities, and I’m excited to contribute, innovate, and make a meaningful impact. I hope to inspire more young Nigerians to take bold steps and pursue their place in international business.”

As Enuma continues her journey in corporate strategy, business development, and global markets, she remains committed to mentorship and knowledge-sharing, encouraging young Nigerians to seize global opportunities and develop strong leadership skills.

“To every young Nigerian with big dreams—go for it. The world is open to those who are willing to put in the work, take risks, and constantly learn. Whether in finance, entrepreneurship, or international business, there is no limit to what we can achieve.”

With her determination, expertise, and vision for the future, Enuma Ezeife is undoubtedly a name to watch in the world of business, setting a new standard for excellence and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
