Nigeria’s education system due for overhaul, says Adefisayo

Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, has stressed the need to overhaul the learning system in the state and nation at large to make it more innovative and engaging.

Speaking at the 17th graduation ceremony of Wellspring College, Adefisayo said the nation’s education system is long overdue for an overhaul.

According to the commissioner, the curriculum should be more engaging and innovation-driven.

She said: “I believe learning should be fun for our children. Every aspect of schooling should be a source of learning. Nothing will change until parents stand up against this stereotypical educational system we have today,” she stressed.

Recall that the Chairman of the state teaching service commission, Mrs. Elizabeth Ariyo, recently, remarked that there is a need for a paradigm shift in the education system and that a change can’t be expected by sticking to the prevailing teaching and learning orientation.

Adefisayo commended the management of Wellspring College for taking learning beyond academics and for nurturing leaders exposed to several relevant skills that will give students the needed edge in the larger society.

Chairman of the occasion and Non-Executive Director, Titan Trust Bank, Andrew Ojei, in his address, observed that education should be made more practical and meaningful to align with 21st Century learning style.

He noted that Nigeria’s educational system is too stereotyped and urged stakeholders to do the needful to effect a change.

A board member of the college, Emmanuel Isimoya, assured of the college’s commitment to educating the total child.

“Our vision is to go beyond academics and groom our students to compete favourably on the global stage. We have remodelled our curriculum by integrating leadership, entrepreneurship and tech skills as central aspects of their learning,” Isimoya said.

In the 2022 graduating class, Adekunle Oluwatobi emerged the valedictorian – and equally recorded one of the best results in the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
